Garage Project opened in Aro Valley in – yes – an abandoned service station in 2011, and quickly become leaders in the New Zealand craft-beer scene. They’ve now opened their first location in Auckland – a ‘cellar door’, warehouse and office. “After Wellington, we used to send more beer to Melbourne than the rest of New Zealand,” says co-founder Jos Ruffell. “But in the past 18 months Auckland has become our single largest market. Perfectly positioned in the Waipara Valley, Black Estate sits long and low in the landscape; grape vines stretching in one direction, undulating hills in the other. Richard Naish of RTA Studio designed the elegantly spare black building that houses a tasting room, restaurant and B&B. “It’s a beautiful, peaceful place and it’s such a thrill to share it with guests,” says Black Estate’s Pen Naish. “You can have lunch and then stroll down the hill to your room for a siesta.” You’ve furnished the guest house with pieces made by friends? Project ‘Alpine’ house Designer Tony Bennett Location Wanaka, Central Otago Brief A new home is built to maximise views and fit into a mountain environment. Overlooking the ranges leading to Mount Aspiring National Park and a short walk from Wanaka town centre, this site was the perfect playground for Tony Bennett of Tab Design to create a contemporary home that draws on the landscape. Bennett set out to create a modern alpine building, while taking advantage of some spectacular views. In essence, his design consists of two pavilions grouped around a series of courtyards, linked by an entry foyer. In the west pavilion, there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms; the main bedroom angled just-so to achieve a view of the lake through the trees. The east pavilion, meanwhile, provides…

What were the main considerations in designing your own home? I tried to imagine how I wanted to live in the house – what would it be like sitting on the sofa, or what am I looking at standing behind the kitchen bench? – then designing these moments. Talk us through the approach to energy efficiency and design? I enjoyed how the strategies I used for insulation and solar gain also added a layer of meaning and reason to the design, while being expressed aesthetically though details like the window placement and deep reveals. Piha, Auckland Winner Project ‘Kawakawa House’ Practice Herbst Architects Location Piha, West Auckland After a mad dash around a few projects in central Auckland, we visited Piha at the end of our first day of judging. There was traffic on the North Western motorway at 4pm, which bemused Mel Bright of MAKE Architecture, our guest judge from Melbourne. “Mayfair is one of Auckland’s most elegant buildings. It looks like a neo-Georgian doll’s house in red brick and off-white plaster, beautifully proportioned with a palm-court entrance, clay-tile roof and sash windows. Children often say it looks like Madeline’s house. It sits like a sentinel at the top of Parnell Rise, a little piece of the Old World transposed to the New World. Designed in 1928 by Gummer and Ford, the pre-eminent architects of the day, and built by Fletcher Construction, it was considered an exemplar for urban living – and maybe it still is. Mary Gaudin Based in the south of France, the New Zealand photographer regularly returns to New Zealand and recently photographed a house in Miramar, Wellington, by Andrew Sexton (p.110). What did you enjoy about photographing the house? It was fantastic to photograph – the light constantly changes throughout the day, casting dramatic light and shadow in beautiful patterns. I enjoyed capturing these effects as they appeared. You work on projects in New Zealand on your return trips? Over the past few years I’ve been doing more and more projects in New Zealand and the plan is to find a way back permanently. The house feels generous, but the site is actually quite narrow. How did your plan work around this? Constraints can often be the drivers of the best ideas. Massing the house on the eastern boundary allowed for the courtyard arrangement, which means the downstairs spaces extend outwards to create additional room. This gives the illusion of there being more space than there is. The volume of the double-height entry also creates an immediate impression of spaciousness. The street is mostly occupied by villas and bungalows. How did you work to integrate a contemporary building into these surroundings? I wanted the design to respect and echo the scale and uniform setback of the heritage neighbours. It was important not to interrupt the rhythm of the surrounding older houses and that it…

Owner Andrew Glenn sees an Asian influence in your work, and that’s certainly present here. A lot of people see those influences in our work – it’s not deliberate, it’s just that we think about how wood goes together, which is what Japanese people do. Right from the start we talked about the lantern moniker – Andrew and Jonathan really liked that, and then we started talking about introducing a suggestion of an Asian influence in the house. The moon window came in around those discussions and seemed like an interesting thing to do. Battens wrap the exterior of the bedrooms. That’s always a big call with a client: we’re going to put bars in front of your windows – but Andrew and Jonathan got it. We’re always fighting this balustrade issue…

You’ve built a low-mass house. Why? On a cold winter Friday evening we arrive to a space that’s about 11 degrees, but which can be heated in less than 30 minutes. Other than during the darkest winter days, there’s enough mass in the timber interior to keep us comfortable for about a day without having to crank up the fire. The trade-off is that in summer we don’t have the mass to regulate peak temperatures – but that’s what sliding doors are for. What does the bach as an “intergenerational asset” mean? The planning creates separate spaces for separate groups or families to occupy with autonomy. We also selected materials and finishes that wear over time, without requiring a lot of maintenance. And we’ve incorporated a few ‘smarts’ like photovoltaics…

Why Wellington and why now? DANAE MOSSMAN Wellington is a vibrant, cultural city and we wanted to be part of the conversation here. There’s a really interesting young-artist scene; a number of energetic new artist-run spaces that offer an alternative energy to the public institutions. Tell us about the space – what was there before? It was in pretty poor condition after a few decades housing light industry and manufacturing. The floor had broken linoleum tiles and a weird little office space. We removed everything and started from scratch; our extraordinary builder – David Kisler – elegantly worked his magic in the space. Peter Haythornthwaite’s life is one of unrelenting curiosity. Design, he says, is something he was “born to do”. Across five decades he’s designed all manner of objects for all sorts of companies, while setting an example for ‘design-led’ in New Zealand well before the term entered common usage. Haythornthwaite’s significant contribution to product design in New Zealand is recognised in Design Generation, an exhibition at Objectspace in Auckland. Curated by Michael Smythe, it’s the sixth major commissioned project in the gallery’s Masters of Craft series, which honours a design practitioner and industry leader whose work has enduring impact. What was the brief like? The brief was quite straightforward. The clients essentially wanted a beach house with a main bedroom, guest bedroom and a bunkroom for overflow. But they put a lot of faith in us. They were quite architecturally experienced, as they had built houses before and understood the ups and downs that go with that process. They were really good at briefing us, then empowering us to come up with an interesting response to the brief. Describe the roof design. What were you trying to achieve visually, and how complicated was it technically? The idea with the roof was to lift the perimeter up all the way around the building and separate it from the wall pane by a continuous clerestory window to engage with the tree canopy.…

The site is flat, for Wellington, but surrounded by neighbours. What were your initial thoughts? Our initial sketches were for a two-storey home on a smaller portion of the site, with the possibility of adding a studio room in future. We were attempting to maximise the usable outdoor space at ground level, however, this upper level greatly reduced privacy to and from the house, and would’ve resulted in the outdoor areas being overlooked. You settled on a U-shaped footprint, though the bottom of the U is narrow? Yes, the floorplan is narrow at the entry, becoming just the width of the entry hall. The home can be seen as two wings. A close friend works in a prestigious San Francisco firm that specialises in domestic interiors for tech-boom billionaires. The budgets with which he works are eye-watering – so too are the scale of the projects. These include everything from penthouses to ranch houses – on actual ranches. Other than his job, he is typical of many young people of his generation. He has a connection to ‘the natural way’ (a little alien to my way of looking at things at his age) – organic food, yoga, walking, cycling, endless consumption of water.
