There are many lovely things about what my son Ira calls “our NEW house”. Three bedrooms instead of one; two fabulous new decks with places to perch; a material palette that runs to weatherboards, fibre-cement and cedar. It’s possible that the annual Milan Design Week has the single-biggest effect on home furnishing around the world over the following year. Designers producing furniture, lighting, ceramics and textiles gather to show their wares and seek inspiration: it’s a huge event that takes over the city. Each year, Dulux sends a team of colour experts to Milan. The team scours the city, seeking out an unknown ceramics maker using the discarded filings of a locksmith, for instance, or the ephemeral textile masks of Kvadrat for GamFratesi. They measure, record, weigh and argue. It’s beautiful, yes, but is it a trend? Where is the world’s collective taste heading? Multidisciplinary artist Vaimaila Urale is perhaps best known for her work within D.A.N.C.E Art Club, a four-piece collective who use the “social dynamic as a creative platform”. In other words, they know how to make communities feel comfortable in galleries through DJ sets, food and parties. However, for 10 years, Urale has also been building her solo career, exhibiting in cities across Aotearoa and abroad including Sydney, San Francisco, Glasgow, and in China. Urale seamlessly moves between two different types of language, that of Samoan tattoo and ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. She first used this unlikely combination in 2011 during the creation of ‘Typeface’, a collaboration with Johann Nortje. ASCII was originally used for sending and receiving messages to teletypes at a time when computers only…

The architects came up with all sorts of ideas on how to tweak the classic rural vernacular: the owners were determined to have that gable. The village of Point Wells is surrounded on three sides by water, across the Whangateau Harbour from the beach-side settlement of Omaha. It’s a sleepy, estuarine place: one road in, one road out; big trees, a store and some lovely chunks of tidal waterfront land. What was the space like before you moved in and what did you have to do? Before we took on the premises, it was studios and a band practice room – it had a rich patina! Our very patient landlord gutted it, replaced the windows, and left us with an empty shell that I have slowly adapted over time. Simon Devitt doesn’t know who designed his house, which sits in a secluded valley in Titirangi, Auckland. The records of the local area are patchy, and no one can tell him if it was a builder with architectural influence or an architect’s design. Though, to an extent, it has never really mattered: the late 60s house has a decidedly modernist influence, with beautifully proportioned windows and a long, lean line. It’s positioned thoughtfully on the steep section, with big windows taking a view of established trees and, in the distance, the lights of downtown Auckland and even Great Barrier Island on a good day. Specialist Wellington ‘bikery’, Bicycle Junction, recently moved from a tiny store in Newtown to a much bigger space in Te Aro designed by Proffer. “We sell bikes, we fix bikes, we teach about bikes and biking via our workshops,” says owner Dan Mikkelsen. “We hold events that celebrate the fun of biking. Shane Cotton’s first solo show at Hastings gallery Parlour Projects runs until October 24, and continues his investigation into toi moko – preserved Māori heads that were traded in the 19th century and, controversially, ended up in museums and collections around the world. Christchurch-based Marie Le Lievre’s paintings are wonderfully intricate mechanisms of concealment and revelation. Though she’s a graduate of Canterbury University’s School of Fine Arts, with a BFA (hons) in painting in 2007, and MFA (distinction) in 2008, she also has a BA in Criminology from Victoria, which may explain something of her work. Biomorphic pools of translucent and opaque pigment in cool monochromes are containers to catch up a personal vocabulary of symbols hinting at real or imagined fears, anxieties and concerns and various spiritual, therapeutic and holistic coping strategies. Brian Carter and Clare Bradley had lived for the best part of the past two decades in a five-bedroom house in Remuera, Auckland, but the children had grown up, gone to university and, as Carter puts it, he “didn’t want to die in Remuera”. Carter, a barrister, and Bradley, a lawyer who now works as a business executive, considered various properties on a number of coastlines around and beyond Auckland, before buying land at Muriwai on the west coast of Auckland. How did you make sense of the flat field? AARON PATERSON The site meant the house could have dominated the landscape. To prevent this we created a cluster of buildings to break down the mass and give the house a village-like intimacy around courtyards and a boardwalk that allow connections to the landscape. What do you love most about your collection? My photo-book collection is small but well-formed. I love the possibility and potential it contains. Some books I return to regularly, others not a lot. When I first started writing about interior design, one of the early pieces I submitted was in response to a photograph in the newspaper. It featured a then-prominent Indian New Zealander pictured in his apartment, the walls of which were painted a dramatic dark blue. New Zealand was going through a period of obsession with neutral paint and I thought this man’s sense of himself – expressed as it was through colour in his home – was something from which we might all learn. Fast forward a quarter of a century and what I hoped was a passing fad – the cult of neutral colour schemes – seems to have stuck to our homes in the same way that black has adhered to our wardrobes. With 25 years of exhibiting behind him, The Dowse is now staging an ambitious retrospective of Gavin Hipkins’ work, which will fill all eight of its galleries. “He makes really intelligent art,” says director Courtney Johnston, “which is also a pleasure to spend time looking at.” Hipkins’ work covers the seemingly quotidian and the everyday. The work of Oliver Perkins is the product of voracious looking, playful experimentation, and rigorous editing. His sources are diverse. He mines the histories of art, architecture, and design – now playing on the more restrained monochrome paintings of Robert Ryman, now the tubular balcony rails of 1990s apartment buildings in Alicante, Spain (until recently the artist’s home). His chosen media are similarly eclectic, encompassing not only traditional painting materials, such as canvas and rabbit-skin glue, but also more everyday substances, such as wood dowelling and enamel house paints. Here’s a plan: if a Hollywood movie was made of her life she’d be played by the actress Kristen Wiig because the artist Christina Read is funny and goofy and charming. And also because she makes self-reflexive art painfully aware of its own verbal tics. Read’s last exhibition, produced for the end of her 2016 Olivia Spencer Bower residency in Christchurch, was titled Here’s A Plan (things to do) and was based on plans for exhibitions that she hadn’t yet made, inspired by chapter titles from a non-fiction book that she hadn’t written. It was with skin-tingling excitement that I boarded a train from London to Lewes in East Sussex to visit Farleys House & Gallery. For decades it had been the home of Lee Miller and Sir Roland Penrose. I’ve long been a Lee Miller fan. Who in the fashion world isn’t? She has, after all, been on every fashion designer’s Pinterest board at one time or another. It’s not just her style that draws me in, though. It’s her art, her writing and her strong feminist story. A sizeable portion of the site falls under the protection of a Significant Ecological Area (SEA), which protects indigenous biodiversity. How did that influence your design? Essentially, no building work is allowed in an SEA, so to some extent this affected the shape of the footprint. The placement and shape of the two structures – the garage and house – were also influenced by our desire to keep as many nikau as possible. Those we did have to remove were replaced with imported nikau – we negotiated this with the council. The shape of the building was also a response to the views. The house cranks and cranes its neck to get the view of the sweet spot. The top floor windows are like the eyes of binoculars focusing on the waves below.…

Even for dedicated appreciators, a relationship with contemporary art is usually divided into two distinct contexts: the home, where paintings, drawings and prints hang on walls and we come to know them in detailed, intimate ways; and galleries and museums, where sculptures, installations, performances and videos sit on plinths, hang from ceilings and fill pitch-black rooms to be seen once or twice and never again. And while we might be more interested in the challenging work of the gallery and the museum, when it comes to living with art, we retreat to works that can rest safely on a wall and not get too much in the way. You’ve owned the house for 18 years, what has it revealed to you over that time? The design is simple and that’s its brilliance. The light and openness is breathtaking. Are there other designs by the architect Peter Bohlin that you admire? The Fifth Avenue Apple store is iconic, of course. What do you love most about your collection? Going to the galleries, shows and auctions and meeting like-minded people who engage in art. Seeing the collection every day at home and getting something new from the pieces over time. I always gravitate towards work that, at first, I might not like or understand and slowly, after spending time with it, it grows on me. I often use my book collection for reference and scan the bookcase for something I haven’t looked at for a while – it can inspire me or remind me of something I was interested in, and now I feel I can tackle that idea. “This building in Albert Park was originally the stables for a grand house on Princes Street that marked the city’s prosperity in the late 19th century. The stables were built in 1883 by Dr Charles Haines and could house at least six horses and two carriages, with tackle and food for the animals (and possibly a stable boy) kept in the loft above. One can imagine a carriage pulling up to the mansion in front to disperse its passengers, before the horses were led past the synagogue into Bowen St and up the service lane.
