This magazine was born from pure optimism: Eighty years ago, Victor Beckett, a sales manager for New Zealand Drycleaners, worked weekends and evenings to create it. In 1936, he launched Building Today, a magazine fizzing with enthusiasm about the trans-formative potential of the modernist age. “In this young country, there is a glorious opportunity for all our people to live and work in beautiful and efficient buildings,” he wrote in his first editorial. Instinct and invention brought builder Ted Nightingale to a solution which grew a company into a household name. Around Wellington, Oriental Parade is widely embraced as the Riviera of the South Pacific. Claude Megson had a fairly fearsome reputation among students at the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture. He ran the second-year design studio and his voice could often be heard booming across the building’s open floors. Megson (1936-1994) lectured passionately on the importance of the individual’s sensory experience in house design, which he illustrated with his own work. Being both lecturer and practising architect made him unique within the school at that time. He spoke with huge conviction about his philosophy and the forms of his buildings appeared to spring forth naturally from intense observation of setting and senses. The British version of Grand Designs is a hit, but not many expected the New Zealand edition to find an international audience. But now the UK, Poland, Australia, Scandinavia and more are tuning in to New Zealand architecture through the show. “It’s running in eight or nine countries now,” says the show’s host, Wellington-based architect Chris Moller. “It’s a big surprise.” Grand Designs NZ’s second series is now on TV3, and Moller is relishing his role as a frontman for innovative design thinking. “Our generation grew up believing architecture is a social vehicle,” he says. “I see it in the old-fashioned idea of a public service.” 3now.com…

Auckland should be grateful to Sinclair O’Connor. The Fremantle-born architect designed a number of iconic apartment buildings around central Auckland at the start of last century, including both Courtvilles, Hampton Court and the elegant Espano flats at the top of Myers Park. Towards the end of the 1920s, he designed Brooklyn, a neo-Georgian pile on Emily Place with art deco flourishes and a façade punctuated by elegant sash windows. It was finished in 1936. Eight decades later, architect Ben Lloyd of Llloyd Hartley Architects and his fiancée Phoebe Gibbons bought their two-bedroom apartment on the sixth floor. To celebrate our magazine’s 80th birthday, we summoned two of the country’s biggest architectural brains to choose the best New Zealand homes of the past eight decades. Julia Gatley is the Head of School and Andrew Barrie is Professor of Design at the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland (both also contribute regularly to HOME). Andrew Meiring and Helen Jones had two very good templates to follow when it came to building this house, in a secluded crescent in the Auckland suburb of Westmere. They relished the buzz and grittiness of the bolt-hole they shared in the heart of Freemans Bay, but they were equally fond of the languorous mood at the family retreat on Great Barrier Island. “We loved the smell of the cedar when we opened up at the Barrier, but also the essence of living in a smaller space in the city,” says Andrew. The design process took a couple of years and a number of iterations. Are we too quick to build? I think all design is an iterative process. Our approach is to do as many design iterations as possible, within the given fee. There are many decisions (about 10,000 we joke) for both the architect and the owners to call correctly. Our client in this case wanted to take time to make the best possible decisions. Your clients wanted to be able to see each other through the house, but how do you prevent everyone on the parade from seeing them as well? Who was Claude Megson? Architect Claude Megson was born in Whangarei and practiced in Auckland from 1962 until his death in 1994. He taught at the University of Auckland from 1965. For much of his lifetime his work was widely considered equal to Ian Athfield, Peter Beaven, John Scott and Roger Walker. How would you describe his architectural approach? Megson broke houses down into separate activities – cooking, dining, living and so on. He studied the effects of changing daylight on a space and its breezes and sounds. He believed an indvidual’s senses could be liberated by rooms shaped down to the smallest item of furniture. Owners Tim and Elizabeth Kelleher wanted a dwelling that would “lift the spirits”, accommodate a growing family and pay homage to Tim’s interest in mid-century New Zealand design and Japanese architecture. For Tobin Smith of Christchurch practice CoLab Architecture and his designer client Tim Kelleher of Sons & Co, the challenges of collaboration were never an issue. The two met in passing a decade ago after Tim and his wife Elizabeth had purchased a steep Lyttelton section. Tim is the first to admit that back then, at 25, he had no real understanding of the building process or how to finance it – and in the years following, his life changed radically with the establishment of his web design business, the birth of two children (they’ve since had a third)…

From the outside, this new house by Herbst Architects in the middle of bucolic Waimauku, on the outskirts of West Auckland, presents itself in two contradictory faces. Approaching from the driveway to the south and east, where a horse arena and stables sit, the house is an impenetrable stone fortress with no obvious entrance. But, from the north and up to the west, occupied by an open field and a work-in-progress vineyard, it’s all glass and sliding timber, with almost as much living space outdoors as in, as open as a rural home in the middle of a grassy paddock can be. Our winter Auckland Style Safari in late August took 50 guests on a fascinating day-long tour of great design. After meeting at Bauer Media headquarters in central Auckland, our group climbed aboard a luxury coach for the short journey to our first destination: King Living, the Australian furniture retailer that has recently established a significant presence here. The next stop was Citta Design, where David Moreland gave a briefing on his furniture collections for the burgeoning New Zealand design house, and Imogen Tunnicliffe presented her team’s range of seasonal design necessities. In early September, the Department of Conservation began demolition of one of New Zealand’s most important buildings: the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre in Urewera National Park, designed by John Scott in 1974. The building is listed as a Category 1 Historic Place on Heritage New Zealand’s register. In 2008, it was closed by the Department of Conservation and left to rot. Scott was a pioneering architect and one of the most important figures in New Zealand architectural history. He designed Wellington’s lauded 1961 Futuna Chapel – itself sorely neglected for a time – and the 1971 Martin House in Hawke’s Bay, both of them Category 1 Historic Places. Taiwanese artist Lee Mingwei’s intimate installations are experiences to partake in, not objects to passively observe. His upcoming show at the Auckland Art Gallery (from Nov 5 to March 19, 2017) is a collection of some of his most potent works. It’s something of a familiar story, with a much less familiar result. Like a lot of villas, this house had an awkward relationship with its backyard: it sat high above a sloping lawn with a series of lean-tos, the first of which had been added not long after the house was built. There was a big, high deck that stepped down, desperately trying to reach the lawn. Added to that, the site sloped to the south, with a cluster of neighbours looming above the back lawn on the northern side. While the obvious thing to do would be to build a big north-facing box, that would have exposed the living areas to the neighbours, and taken up much of the lawn. This isn’t the first time you’ve designed a house for yourself – what did you learn the first times around? I learned not to be too precious and feel like the design had to embody everything I am as an architect. I think you can scare yourself off from taking it on in the first place, and hopefully it won’t be the last time you’ll get to do it! The back lawn runs to the south west. Built in 1976. Demolished by the Department of Conservation in 2016 At Aniwaniwa, near Lake Waikaremona, the late John Scott (Taranaki, Te Arawa, Te Ati Awa, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Kahungunu), one of the outstanding figures in New Zealand architecture, designed a building that brought together Maori design principles and Modernist architecture. The Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre was acclaimed for its sensitive bush siting and marae-like spatial organisation. Transcending a brief for an administration facility, John Scott produced a building that, radically and optimistically, expressed the spirit of its place and opened up a›bi-cultural path for New Zealand architecture. HOME likes well-designed high-density living, so we were delighted to host an evening at The International apartments on Princes Street in Auckland recently. Our editor, Jeremy Hansen, spoke to interior architect Rufus Knight about his vision for the building, which sits in an established heritage precinct. The International presents a new level of apartment living for Auckland: generous outdoor living spaces, Boffi kitchens and a three-metre stud. How did you decide on the form the house was going to take? The site is an interesting wedge shape with steep natural topography that opens and elevates from the street to the rear boundary. The long, linear floor plan was designed to open the body of the house to views and sun. The single monopitch roof follows the topography of the site, allowing the house to be elevated as high as possible within the site constraints. What makes this house particularly apt for its Lyttelton setting? The linear nature of the plan allows the house to focus toward the southern views of the working harbour, while at the same time pulling northern sunlight in through high-level glazing to the north. How did you position the house without many natural elements to respond to? LH: We were looking to find some good reason to put the building in one place or another. There didn’t seem to be one, as the site was uniformly the same. So we inverted it and defined the site with the house. We made two cross-axes with the gabion walls which start as very faint gestures way out into the landscape and then rise out of the ground. That gives us four quadrants, which is what we needed because the dogs need to run in one, the horses need to run in another, one is private, one is public. That gave us a sense of the site.
