Julian Goodare is Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh. His books include The European Witch-Hunt (2016), and he is director of the online Survey of Scottish Witchcraft. On page 15, Professor Goodare investigates the financial consequences of witch-hunting in Scotland. Michelle D. Brock is Associate Professor of History at W&L University, Virginia. She has written widely on religion and belief in early modern Scotland, and is the author of Satan and the Scots: The Devil in Post-Reformation Scotland, c.1560-1700. The devil in early modern Scotland is the subject of Professor Brock's article on page 32, exploring how far belief in Satan permeated everyday life. Scholars from Edinburgh College of Art and the universities of Birmingham and Melbourne have collaborated with Historic Environment Scotland to reconstruct lost performances at the palace. The researchers used LIDAR scanning to capture the chapel royal of Linlithgow Palace as it currently stands. The team then consulted historical and architectural records and worked with historians at Historic Environment Scotland to virtually reconstruct what the chapel might have looked like when James IV visited for Easter celebrations around 1512. Music from the Carver Choirbook – one of only two large-scale collections of music to survive from pre-Reformation Scotland – was chosen for the recording. Professional singers from the Binchois Consort recorded the music in an anechoic chamber, which was then overlaid with the reconstructed acoustic modelling of the chapel. A link…

During World War II, the Casey family of New York welcomed Allied servicemen of the Royal Navy, RNVR, Merchant Navy, Fleet Air Arm and RAF into their home, providing a warm welcome for men often stationed thousands of miles from their homes and families. The Caseys kept a photograph album containing an image and notes relating to each man they welcomed, and in many cases, kept in touch with the servicemen for years after the war. The men came from all areas of the UK, New Zealand, Canada, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands and you can see a list of their names on the project website http://scot.sh/casey. Since the submission, Neil has been able to confirm that James Gordon died from drowning in Tobago. The caption accompanying the photograph of Cluny castle indicated that Cluny partly funded its redevelopment from his Tobago estates. However, the author’s research found that he claimed not to have taken any income from them.
