Children wearing gas masks carry out a practice evacuation of a school in Kingston, Greater London, after a canister of tear gas was discharged. Although gas ordnance was never used during raids on British cities, masks were carried at all times as a precaution. 38 million masks had been distributed to the public by September 1939.
