The health benefits of listening to music are well documented and, naturally, already fully appreciated by our audiophile readers. Review: Adam Smith Lab: Paul Miller If the closure of Japanese cartridge manufacturer, Koetsu, in 2024 left a gap in the lives of analogue fans the world over, it also left a gap in the portfolio of its UK distributor, Absolute Sounds. In this case, the door led to cartridge brand Analog Relax, and the EX300 under consideration here is its entry level model, retailing in the UK for £2698. Analog Relax is a Japanese company, based in Tokyo, and focused on ‘creating handcrafted state-of-the-art moving-coil cartridges with a modern attitude, while still respecting and being faithful to the Japanese artisanal traditions’. Review: Mark Craven Lab: Paul Miller Although SVS sells a variety of loudspeakers, from its desktop-friendly Prime Wireless Pro powered monitors to the recently launched Ultra Evolution series [HFN Jul ’24], it’s best known as a subwoofer manufacturer. This is, after all, how the Youngstown, Ohio-based company first got started in 1998, and in the intervening years it’s evolved a catalogue of subwoofers that’s now crowned by the new 17-Ultra R|Evolution models. SVS claims to be the ‘top subwoofer brand in the world’, but how has it achieved such a lofty status? Firstly, by offering plenty of choice. GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS I Like It! Anthology 1963-1966 Strawberry Records CR3JAM027 (three discs; part mono) There’s no shortage of Gerry And The Pacemakers anthologies, but this 98-track package is the best yet. It covers their most important period, before Gerry went solo, and is bursting with riches. Along with the hits which made the group one of The Beatles’ main rivals in the USA, there were whole albums which could serve as synecdoche for ‘Merseybeat’, with the usual cover versions and originals, all presented in glorious mono. Then you get to CD3, with an entire live album (first time in stereo) from 1964, and six stereo tracks including ‘Ferry Cross The Mersey’ and ‘Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying’, plus a load of previously unreleased cuts. DANIELSSON, POHJOLA, PARRICELLI Trio Asked to put together a trio for this second release sponsored by Bordeaux vineyard Château Palmer, bassist Lars Danielsson first chose a long-term colleague, guitarist John Parricelli, then added Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, with whom he’d worked only briefly. And with Pohjola’s trumpet sweet and soft-edged, the emphasis is on melody and atmosphere rather than solos, from the opening ‘Calme de la Château’ to a soothing ‘La Chanson d’Hélène’ and a stately ‘Mood Indigo’. Perhaps only a few local residents recognise the historical importance of an old, tired-looking building on the edge of the industrial area of Sausalito, California. Resembling a windowless barn clad in decaying bias-cut redwood, the funky structure at 2200 Bridgeway was once the legendary Record Plant [HFN May ’23], one of three ‘sister studios’ that ruled the roost of rock and pop recording 40 and 50 years ago. The other two – also long gone – were in New York and Los Angeles. This outpost, on the north shore of the San Francisco Bay, generated many iconic recordings of the 1970s and ’80s, including Stevie Wonder’s Songs In The Key Of Life and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. By the time you read this, you might have been assailed by another year’s horrifying statistics about the loss of polar ice. But you can still watch the six-minute video that music superstar Jacob Collier made in the Arctic last year. When Greenpeace invited Collier to take a trip to the far north, he boarded the Arctic Sunrise along with Norwegian alt-pop singer Aurora and sailed to Sveabreen, Svalbard, beyond the Norwegian coast and far into the Arctic Circle. Japanese speaker marque TAD has unveiled the ME1TX for its Evolution series. Priced £17,500 in Black or Silver White finishes, the ME1TX has been developed by chief engineer Toru Nagatani and features ‘hundreds of improvements’ over the 2016-era ME1. A compact three-way speaker measuring 411x254x402mm (hwd), it combines a 25mm beryllium tweeter and 90mm magnesium alloy midrange in its proprietary Coherent Source Transducer. Bass (to 420Hz) is handled by a 160mm multi-layered aramid composite cone. Offering the familiar styling and black or silver finish options of Musical Fidelity’s Nu-Vista series, the Nu-Vista 600.2 tube/hybrid integrated amplifier leverages the design of the ’800.2 [HFN Aug ’23] but at a more affordable £7999 price. Review: Mark Craven Lab: Paul Miller Rotel has crowned its new Michi Q5 a ‘Transport DAC’, which strikes us as a somewhat vague description of what is, first and foremost, a CD player. Yes, it has digital inputs to make wider use of its onboard DAC, plus digital outputs, but just one glance at the Q5’s distinctive top-loading drive mechanism – plus the fact it resides under the ‘CD player’ tab on Rotel’s website – tells you this is a unit primarily aimed at silver disc lovers. Review: Ken Kessler Lab: Paul Miller This just may be the most self-fulfilling review I’ve ever written. DS Audio has unleashed a valve energiser and equaliser, the TB-100, for its optical cartridges. Up to this point, every one of its cartridges has been launched with a matching solid-state energiser of relative or comparable price, but the TB-100 has been released on its own. Because every DS Audio cartridge will work with any of the energisers regardless of price, this time it’s all about the tubes. At £17,500, the TB-100 joins the existing range of five energiser/equalisers, at a price point just below the middle rank. Review: Jamie Biesemans Lab: Paul Miller First seen at High End Munich in 2023, Canton’s Reference range brought a major renewal to the flagship offering of Germany’s largest loudspeaker brand. Introducing a new design aesthetic, with a rounded lute-shape cabinet profile made popular by Sonus faber many years ago, and integrating new drivers, it heralded a major course change from the previous Reference K generation [HFN May & Aug ’22]. Yet Canton’s penchant for sprawling ranges has not changed, so the Reference series contains no fewer than eight models – and that’s not counting the exclusive GS edition, nor the two Alpha models revealed at Munich in 2024 [see boxout, p77]. Marillion vocalist and wordsmith Derek Dick, aka Fish, knew that concept albums weren’t for everyone. Discussing his band’s chart-topping June 1985 masterpiece Misplaced Childhood, during the 72-minute Childhood Memories documentary found on the album’s Blu-ray/4CD box set reissue, he says they ‘didn’t mention the “C” word. We just told [record label EMI] that we were making an album. We kept it quiet’. Yet Misplaced Childhood is a haughty Concept Album with a capital ‘C’ if ever there was one. And plenty of people, including presumably the EMI management, loved it. Four decades on from its release, it remains Marillion’s best-selling album. PATRICIA KOPATCHINSKAJA, THOMAS KAUFMANN, CAMERATA BERN ‘Exile’ – Panufnik, Schnittke, Wyschnegradsky, Ysaÿe, etc. Alpha ALPHA1110 (downloads to 96kHz/24-bit resolution) Concept albums from PK and her Swiss partners never make for a comfortable listen. Schnittke’s First Cello Sonata, in neo-Baroque dress, trades in Mahlerian violence but keeps heavy irony at bay – unlike the Schubert dances used for one of the interludes. PK bends and twists the ferocious solo part in Panufnik’s Concerto as though she had written it yesterday, but the most modern-sounding music here comes from 1931, a quarter-tone string quartet by Wyschnegradsky, slipping and sliding on musical black ice. The title track is a chromatic ‘symphonic poem’ for strings in the style of Verklärte Nacht – a revelation for those who knows Ysaÿe only through the solo sonatas.…

Hi-fi enthusiasts are familiar with the impact that the interaction between their listening room’s acoustic and the behaviour of their loudspeakers can have on the sound they hear. Even quite slight movements of the listening position, or the locations of the speakers, can make a distinct difference. Hence spending time altering these positions or making changes to the room’s furnishings, etc, can often produce improved results. However, there are other forms of interaction that tend to be overlooked. The listener assumes these are inherent to the speakers or amplifiers being used. In one sense, that is true, but potentially misleading if you assume it can’t be tweaked to give better results. The snag is that these effects arise before the sound leaves the speakers, and often for reasons most listeners…

In the Sound Off pages in HFN Jan ’25, reader Paul Radford wrote in asking about using a UPS [uninterruptible power supply]. I use them in both my hi-fi systems for surge protection, but the first time I added one (a CyberPower 1325VA) I also noticed an improvement in treble clarity from my B&W DM 640s. Marten is the Swedish loudspeaker manufacturer, established as a family business by Leif Mårten Olofsson in 1998, and Parker Trio one of its floorstanding options. Yet the jazz angle still applies, as the company’s other speaker ranges are Coltrane, Mingus, and Oscar. Perhaps Olofsson, who heads up the company as its chief designer, has Monk or Davis in mind for the future… Launched in May 2020 with as much fanfare as the Covid restrictions of the time allowed, the Parker series, with the Trio flanked by a bigger Quintet tower and the smaller Duo standmount, replaced the outgoing Heritage range. Review: Jamie Biesemans Lab: Paul Miller Denon updates its AV receivers at the drop of a hat, but its stereo amplifiers typically enjoy a far longer shelf-life. Side-stepping its 110th anniversary PMA-A110 model [HFN Dec ’20] for a moment, the brand’s previous flagship, the PMA-2500NE [HFN Aug ’16], illustrates this longevity. Nonetheless, there’s a direct line between the PMA-A110 and the £2999 PMA-3000NE tested here, as numerous hardware tweaks devised for that limited edition model underpin Denon’s new stereo integrated. There’s also an iterative feel to the PMA-3000NE. Perhaps that’s not a surprise, as it’s the tenth generation of Denon’s top-tier integrated amplifier, so, arguably, ‘I’ve seen this before’ is a reasonable reaction. Claudio Monteverdi has been labelled a Baroque composer and a Venetian composer, despite the facts that he published six collections before the 17th century even began and that he worked in Mantua until he was 45 years old. At that point, disgruntled with his terms of service, he travelled to Rome in search of new (preferably papal) employment. He took with him a newly published volume, hot off the press, of sacred works which he had written over the past decade. Comprising a Mass setting, and the elements for an impracticably lengthy service of Vespers, the volume was dedicated to Pope Paul V and evidently designed as a lavish showcase of Monteverdi’s talents. Produced by Chris Kimsey [The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton], Misplaced Childhood was recorded between March and May 1985 at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, Germany, just 150 metres from the then-still-standing Berlin Wall. Kimsey had been recruited by David Munns, head of A&R at EMI at the time, and he met the band during the album’s early writing sessions. ‘We were quite excited, because here was the guy who had done The Stones’, Fish recalls. ‘Before that, we had worked with Nick [Tauber], and now we felt we had gone up a division’. The band were also less than satisfied with how their previous album on EMI, 1984’s Fugazi, was mixed and mastered. The title track features a panorama of Sean’s synths and percussion – and also has great depth – and McAlmont’s evocative falsetto soars above the rain and city lights described on ‘Uptown/Downtown’. On ‘Sorry I Made You Cry’ he is contrite, wondering, over thick synth chords, ‘Can we blame it on the moon eclipsing?’. There’s a seductive dream-like atmosphere throughout as hypnagogic visions are fashioned into cosmic soul tunes. Big Hi-Fi’ is a neat way to describe a clean and powerful sound system used to assist live sound in a music club or small hall. BHF does not come cheap or easy, which is why so many music venues wreck music. The Ronnie Scott’s jazz and rockishpop club in London’s Soho has recently been refurbished and I kept thinking the words ‘Big Hi-Fi’ when I went to one of the re-opening events – the premiere of Inferno 67, an extraordinary jazz theatrical show by trumpeter/bandleader/arranger/composer Guy Barker. Athought occurred to me as I toured the UK Hi-Fi Show Live last September: ‘Where did all these subwoofers come from?’. Dedicated ‘bass-makers’ aren’t a common sight at hi-fi exhibitions, but there were plenty put to work at the Ascot Grandstand, in demonstrations hosted by KEF, Arcam, ELAC and others. It was nice to witness what could be a shift in the industry way of thinking. Subwoofers, it seems to me, have long been considered personae non gratas in hi-fi set-ups, deemed only fit for the rough and tumble of home cinema sound. In Barry Fox’s ‘Life Lessons’ column [HFN Feb ’25] he discussed making use of Wi-Fi signal extenders to improve network coverage around the home. I was surprised he didn’t also mention Powerline adapters which pass Ethernet signals through a home’s mains system. These are a great way of connecting hardware to a router that might be several rooms or floors away and a useful alternative to Wi-Fi. I use a cheap two-plug system from TPLink to connect a Sky Q satellite set-top box, through my mains wiring, to our router. This works fine, despite Sky insisting its box should only be directly connected to the router. Some Powerline plugs also double up as Wi-Fi extenders, too. I thought to let you know that, after the answer to my letter by Mr Lesurf [HFN Nov ’24], I purchased two new aerials – from Blake UK – for a fair price. I have a ‘two element’ FM aerial for my Yamaha CT-710 that works best in a vertical orientation, and a ‘three element’ FM aerial for my Audiolab 8000T in a horizontal orientation.
