Musical Fidelity’s Digilog DAC was an early design that shared the limelight with the now-legendary Arcam Black Box in the late-Eighties, it offered 16-bit/48kHz digital conversion and few other features. In direct contrast, the M6x DAC has a welter of inputs and outputs, plus number crunching up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 through the USB port and up to 24-bit/192kHz via the optical and AES/EBU inputs – plus MQA decoding. With the thinking that: ‘if it ain’t broke, why fix it?’ Sugden has designed relatively few products. Certainly, the sound quality of its components is such that they’ve never failed to sell in good numbers – so ‘range refreshes’ have rarely been needed. This explains the curious story of the Masterclass DAC-4. Launched in 2015, it is by the standards of this group, an antique. Its pair of 16-bit, four times oversampling Philips TDA1543 DAC chips are a world away from today’s offerings. There’s no oversampling or filtering of the digital signal. Taking place during the last weekend in September, the UK Hi-Fi Show Live! returned to Ascot’s Grandstand after a three-year absence, boasting over 200 featured brands with another 30 occupying the Panoramic Headphone Zone. They used to say that you know you’re getting old when policemen look young, but these days – for audiophiles at least – it’s a case of being able to remember the original product that’s just being relaunched as an anniversary model. Vinyl’s ongoing second wind has resulted in some unexpected developments in the last few years; the dramatic upswing in devices fitted with phono stages being perhaps the most notable. Originally set up as an electronic design consultancy, M2Tech claims to have made the first DAC to handle 384kHz files asynchronously via USB. As its nomenclature suggests, this is the fourth Young DAC – named after Neil– and is part of the Rock Stars series. The Van Der Graaf MkII is a power supply – well it had to be, didn’t it? – that’s a useful add-on option, but it isn’t included here. Like all the DACs in the group, it has no network playback functionality but does offer Bluetooth streaming, which will be handy for some. Started by Luigi Lorenzon in Morrovalle, Italy, in 1992, Synthesis has made a name for itself producing attractively turned-out products in small volumes, with as much attention paid to the sound quality as their appearance. The Roma 69DC epitomises this, with handsome styling and finishes that include lacquered wood. In aesthetics and in feel, this is a world away from the much more functional Benchmark or Pro-Ject offerings. As with the M2Tech converter overleaf, the designers have taken a common-or-garden pressed steel case and cleverly transformed it in a quirky, attractive way. With a soundbar family now consisting of the colossal Ambeo Soundbar Max (£2,200) and midrange Ambeo Soundbar Plus (£1,300), Sennheiser’s compact Ambeo Soundbar Mini could be seen as the baby of the family. It’s tempting to refer to it as Sennheiser’s ‘entry-level’ model, although the £700 price tag is still relatively high compared with similar offerings from rivals. A very good friend of mine and I sit down to listen to some music after our regular lunch meet-ups. We meet alternatively at each other’s house and go out for lunch, then return for a listening session. We usually bring a selection of our own chosen music to add to the mix to audition on the other’s hi-fi. We have similar audio setups, with valve amplification throughout and we have both invested heavily in them over the years. Though we have both attended many live concerts in the past, our musical tastes are very different. Hi-Fi Choice employs the most methodical test and measurement regime in the business. Here’s how we do it… DIGITAL-TO-ANALOGUE CONVERTERS GROUP TEST THE FIRST THING we do when testing DACs is to power them up and keep them running for 48 hours or so. This is because electronics sound better when at full operating temperature, and this is a variable that can be easily eliminated. All DACs then get a few hours with IsoTek’s Test And Burn-In CD via a CD transport, on repeat. Then each is auditioned in the review system, placed on a Townshend Audio Seismic Shelf. Early to the DAC revival, some 15 or so years ago, Benchmark’s DAC1 was a high-quality, affordable USB-capable product that captured the imaginations of what used to be called ‘computer audio’ fans. It soon gained a reputation for sound quality. Now, it has three different DAC3 variants, all of which have the same electronics and ESS ES9028PRO converter chips, but offer differing connectivity. The DAC3 B tested here is the entry-level option with digital inputs only and no variable output level control, so you can’t use it as a preamp. Benchmark offers the LA3 for that purpose, should you need it. Nor is there a headphone output; the HPA4 headphone amp/preamp serves this purpose in the range. Pro-Ject has made the realm of ‘affordable audiophile’ hi-fi its very own. Its range of ‘Box’ components offer great functionality in a compact case and the DAC Box RS2 personifies this. It’s highly specified, has a welter of features and is the most affordable design here. The only way to accommodate this product’s generous feature set is by the provision of a large backlit LC display – which happens to match the company’s CD Box RS2, by the way. A neat aluminium remote control unit is supplied, or you can use the fascia buttons to navigate its menu system. THIS IS AN interesting group with a diverse range of design priorities. In sixth place is the Benchmark DAC3 B. This is a strong product on its own terms; its sound is impressively clear, open and detailed. Build is excellent and there’s a complete lack of frills, which many will find attractive. All this said, the group is a tough one and it just doesn’t shine in value terms. Next is the M2Tech Young MkIV, which sounds very good but is crying out for the company’s optional power supply. If that well-lit treble could be tamed just a touch, this would really be something. As it stands, it’s very musically rewarding to listen to, just match it carefully to smooth systems. Goldring’s E Series has earned a solid reputation for providing some of the best options available at their price points. The E1, E2 and E3 have now been joined by the imaginatively named E4, which augments the range rather than replaces any of the existing models. The E4 is visually similar to the E3, but the difference is in the diamond. Where the cheaper cart uses a bonded elliptical stylus, the E4 switches to a nude elliptical one which should improve both detail retrieval and performance towards the inner edge of a record. During the pandemic when we were forced into the isolation of lockdown, many of us found music was one of the few things that could create a sense of reconnection with the world and our fellow socially distanced human beings. The new version is made to a much higher specification than the Minuet and benefits from some of the high-end technology the company developed for its Charleston speaker cable.
