A funny thing happened while we were shooting the double cover for this issue. Our design director, Ridge Carpenter, had chosen a beautiful inky blue (Indigo by Sherwin-Williams) for one of the walls, and everyone who saw it in our photo studio reacted in the same way: They would stop in their tracks, stare, and say, “Wow, what color is that?” That question happens to be the name of one of this magazine’s longtime columns (check it out on page 19), and I was delighted to see the headline come to life. “Wow” illustrates just how transformational color can be: We’ve featured soothing blue bedrooms, sophisticated olive green offices, and in one especially memorable photo, a glossy lemon piano. If you’re in the market for waterfront views and nautical style, you can’t do much better than a lighthouse. Many of them are no longer serving as critical navigational guides (GPS and radar have replaced them), so the historic structures are easier than ever to buy: A law passed in 2000 allows the transfer of federally owned lighthouses to private parties. If you’ve ever wondered whether you could bring an old house into the future, this year’s HGTV Smart Home will give you hope: It was built in 1987! Instead of constructing a house from scratch as usual, the Smart Home team renovated every square foot of this existing property and turned it into a showcase for cool technology.
