I can still picture the cover of the very first issue—it featured a photo of my fellow HGTV designer David Bromstad, and I remember thinking I couldn’t wait to one day be in his spot. Buying a new house is a fresh start, and that’s exactly what I was looking for when I closed on this home in Grayslake, IL, just four days after my divorce became final. The place needed some updates—the design was very ’90s, and not in a trendy way—but the minute I saw the black-and-white checkerboard tile on the first floor, I thought, This is so me! I repainted the exterior before moving in (I chose Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams), but I’ve done the rest of the decorating while living here with my son, Ayden, who has taken over the basement apartment. Cement These tiles are porous, so they should be sealed before and after grouting. The colors are often deeply saturated. Porcelain One of the most affordable options, these tiles are scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and ideal for keeping out moisture. Give it sun Place your plant in a bright spot with indirect sunlight and rotate it monthly to give all the leaves some exposure. Trim it Cut away any leaves that turn more than 50% brown. If your tree is getting too tall and narrow, remove the top third to encourage wider growth. Feed it Use a slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year. Type Sanded and unsanded grouts are the industry standard: They’re inexpensive and easy to use. For a more durable option, try epoxy. It’s stain resistant and holds up to harsh cleansers. Color If you want your tile to be the star, pick a matching grout so the joint lines aren’t distracting. If you’d rather highlight the pattern in the tile layout, choose a contrasting grout.
