redesign a dresser The blue decals used here come in a long roll with paper backing. Cut strips slightly taller than the drawer fronts, and remove the drawers and knobs. Starting with the top drawer, adhere the decals on an angle. (You can use an extra strip as a spacer between stripes.) Fold the excess over the drawer edges, and trim. For the next drawer, do the same, but angle the stripes in the opposite direction. Repeat for each drawer; replace the drawers and knobs. how bad is it to paint your house the same color as a neighbor’s? If you covet the cobalt blue or yellow of a home on your block, you’re better off swatching some second choices. “Copying a distinctive color—one that somebody probably chose to make a statement and express individuality—is generally not a good idea,” says Lisa Moon, a color consultant with Paper Moon Painting in Texas. Even if you asked and got the lime green light, it’s less than ideal for your street, since two matching unique-color houses might look odd. If the other home isn’t visible from yours, though, you could use the shade in a secondary way, like on your shutters or front door. Says Moon, “This may flatter your neighbor and preserve a good relationship.” •…

take some doors off Score the charm of open shelving, instantly! Just remove the doors—truly as simple as unscrewing the hinges—patch hardware holes, and touch up the paint. Whitney Rainbolt was surprised by how much she liked her home at first sight. “The outside is modern, and I’m more Southern traditional, but it was just so cool,” she says.
