When British colonists settled along the East Coast in the 1700s, they copied a popular house style from back home called Georgian (after King Georges I to III). It had a boxy shape, symmetrical windows, and a central door. The style came to be known as Colonial, referring to its era. In the 1900s it made a comeback as a Colonial Revival—same shape, with new features like porticos and dormers that were, by then, cheaper and easier to put in.
