My first house was a small 1930s brick cottage. Little by little I updated it, but there was one room—a bathroom—I never got to. TURN THE PAGE FOR STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS STEP 1: Start by choosing a tile for the space that contrasts your existing floor in both shape and scale, and lay out a pattern to determine your design. Feather out the edges of the pattern for a transitional look. Insert spacers in between the tiles so that the pattern isn’t off. TIP: Use a permanent marker to trace your pattern on the floor so you know where to cut. STEP 2: Use an oscillating saw to cut flooring to fit around the design of the tile, then use a putty knife and hammer to pry up the flooring being replaced by tile.
