sara peterson: You’ve played such an important role in creating this issue—thank you! Many people will say it’s your best work yet. You focused primarily on painting old furniture. What was it like to breathe new life into all those past-their-prime pieces? paintbrush: I felt like a hero! Did you see that poor, sad nightstand on page 80? She’s high-gloss cherry red now, and she looks like a million bucks. I don’t mean to brag, but what other $12 hardware store tool can do that? sp: True—you’re the champ of cheap makeovers. 1 Karen and Mina live right next to each other in Indianapolis, IN. “I had my house first!” says Mina. “Mom moved in next door so we could be close.” Their reno career began when Mina enlisted Karen’s help to redo her home in 2007. Once the fix-up was complete, the two were hooked on restoring old houses. 2 With Mina’s reno under their (tool) belts, the women decided to start their own company, Two Chicks and a Hammer, rehabbing dilapidated houses in Indianapolis. They’ve restored more than 40 so far, working on nine at once at their busiest point. “We love our city because of the patient, kind, and considerate people who live here,” says Karen. “And it has food, music, arts, and a sports scene that rivals any…
