Designer Liz Caan always planned on overhauling her tired kitchen. According to the National Gardening Association, a plant is a weed if it meets three requirements: 1 It was not planted intentionally. 2 It grows where it's not wanted. 3 It's invasive, meaning it spreads rapidly and can put native plants in danger. It may surprise you to hear that every month we create our cover from scratch. And by scratch, I mean we actually build a room in a huge New York City photo studio. It's by far the biggest design challenge we give ourselves. Days before the shoot, pros arrive for the heavy lifting: laying floorboards, putting up drywall, installing windows, whatever we need. Next, 50 to 100 boxes of preselected props arrive. Each one gets unpacked and arranged on tables around the studio to pick and choose from later on. Then it's finally time for the fun! 1 Cover Bowls Measure a plastic bowl's height. Cut the wallpaper into 1-inch-wide strips that are 1 inch longer than the bowl's height. (We used 68 strips for the larger bowl above, which is 5 inches tall.) Starting on the outside of the bowl, use wallpaper paste to attach the strips, overlapping them slightly and folding the ends over the rim as you go. Repeat on the inside, but trim the strips so they don't fold over. Cut circles out of the wallpaper. Paste them on the bottom of the bowl (both inside and outside). Keep in mind that the bowl won't be food-safe. After three years of nonstop DIYing, Katrina and Hasani Sullivan couldn't have been prouder of their 1956 home in Sacramento, CA. By July 2012, the couple—she's in accounts payable for a law firm, he's an HVAC technician—had refinished the floors, painted every wall, sodded the lawn, crafted a headboard, hung chandeliers, and kicked off a kitchen remodel. Instead, mulch it (chop it into tiny pieces). All you need is a mulching mower. If you don't have one, you can use a regular mower, but you'll need to remove its bag so the leaves get cut up but not sucked up. Either way, as the leaf bits decompose on your lawn, they act as compost, fertilizing your grass.
