"Clothes don't hang well on wire because it's so thin," says Elizabeth Pratt Easter, Ph.D., a textile consultant and professor at the University of Kentucky. "It can create ridges or creases, or even misshape an item's shoulders if the garment is a knit." If you don't want to splurge on the gold standard of hangers—wood—go for plastic, which costs a little more than wire but is more durable. Q The grout between my kitchen tiles is wearing away. What should I do? CHIP SAYS: GIVE IT A GO. First scrape away at least ⅛ inch of the old grout with a grout removal tool—you can get a handheld one for about $5 or a bit that attaches to the end of an oscillating power tool (like a Dremel Multi-Max) starting at about $15 at the hardware store. Clean the area with a disinfectant to kill any mold or mildew, then start regrouting: If your tiles are spaced ⅛ inch apart or less, use non-sanded grout; otherwise, use sanded grout. Decorate cabinet doors Remove the cabinet doors. If the glass panes are removable (ours were), take them out and lay them flat. Arrange the decals—these come in strips—on the front of the glass in a pattern you like, taping them down with painter's tape. Apply the decals following the instructions on the packaging, removing the tape as you go. Cut away any excess around the glass edges with a crafts knife. When Danielle Balanis, a part-time designer, and her husband, Nic, remodeled their Birmingham, AL, kitchen two years ago, they didn't have the option of making it the size of a football field, the way so many renovators do these days. Rather, they had about 80 square feet to work with-which meant using smart design moves like a U-shaped layout, open shelves, and an almost-all-white color scheme to create a hyperfunctional cook space. "It may not be a huge area," says Danielle, "but it's so efficient that we never feel short on space." To make a cushiony surface sturdier, top it with a tray, leaving 8 to 10 inches all around so you have room to put up your feet. 2 An ottoman doesn't attract the attention a sofa would, so you can take a risk with it.
