how to make decorating easier. Take this dresser, for example. It’s cute, but — like a blank wall or a bland sofa — it needs some zing. How do you get that? you’re wondering. Here’s my favorite trick — or, as we like to call it at the magazine, “a no-fail formula”: I start by picturing four personality-packed accessories that I need. For this dresser, it’s a lamp, a mirror, a vase of flowers, and a pretty object. Now that I have my ingredients, I can go shopping — and this plain-Jane piece will get a big shot of style. Your magazine inspired me to stencil a giant house number on our front door. I used Red Tomato by Sherwin-Williams for the door and a blend of that color and Coral Reef by Valspar for the house number. Our neighbors just love it. —Joelle Willis, Schenectady, NY What a great gift guide in the December issue (“75 Great Gifts from 25 Shops We Love”). So many items you featured caught my eye, I ended up shopping for myself too! —SHELAH HARRIS, SIMI VALLEY, CA I was happy to see that you framed tea towels in “DIY Kitchen Art” in the September issue. Some tea towels are simply too pretty to land in the washing machine! —Meg Meyer, Fort Collins, CO Thanks for including my favorite HGTV stars, Joanna and Chip…

...to vacuum, rather than sweep, the kitchen floor? Don’t worry about bits of food gunking up your machine. Vacuuming is still better than sweeping. “Sweeping in the kitchen stirs up dust, which will just settle back on your counters or the floor,” says Debra Johnson, training manager for Merry Maids. “Vacuuming eats up the dirt.” Just make sure the vacuum is on the hard-floor setting so you don’t scratch your hardwood or tile, and shake out crumbs from the bag or canister after each use to prevent mold and smells. not bad at all! …to not wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? Even if you can’t trace your roots back to the Emerald Isle, it’s still a nice gesture to sport some green on March 17. It is not only…
