Since we started the magazine in 2011, we have made over scores of rooms—living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, kids’ rooms—and each one has had a great story to go along with it. But perhaps none was more memorable than working with the folks at The Bowery Mission, a charitable organization that helps the homeless in New York City. A few months back, they were deep into a major renovation at one of their women’s facilities in Harlem but didn’t know what to do with the empty patio space.
