One of my favorite things to do for the magazine is dream up DIY projects—but not at my desk. It’s better to walk around a home improvement store until something catches my eye and makes me wonder, Hmm...what could we do with that? DIYing means taking an ordinary supply, like an inexpensive sheet of pegboard, and making it cool. (You’ll see pegboard in a whole new light starting on page 23.) But DIYing also means tackling a house project without calling a pro—as in one day you’ve had it with the icky brass faucet in your bathroom, so you swap it for a new brushed-nickel one (it’s really not that hard). Hang your most-often-used coffee cups. To re-create this design, use 2-inch-wide painter’s tape to tape off diagonal stripes that are about 1 inch wide. Fill in the stripes with paint.
