One of my favorite things to do for the magazine is dream up DIY projects—but not at my desk. It’s better to walk around a home improvement store until something catches my eye and makes me wonder, Hmm...what could we do with that? DIYing means taking an ordinary supply, like an inexpensive sheet of pegboard, and making it cool. (You’ll see pegboard in a whole new light starting on page 23.) But DIYing also means tackling a house project without calling a pro—as in one day you’ve had it with the icky brass faucet in your bathroom, so you swap it for a new brushed-nickel one (it’s really not that hard). HOSTS “When we first saw our Beach Flip house, all I could think was Man, what did we get ourselves into?” says Chicago consultant Alexander Borre. He and his fiancée, Martha Montross, a wealth management adviser, beat out three other teams in the renovation reality competition. In case you missed it, here’s how the show worked: Each team was tasked with remodeling and decorating a waterfront fixer-upper on Alabama’s Gulf Shores over eight weeks. The team that increased the value of their house by the greatest amount, as determined by a group of local appraisers, won a $50,000 grand prize. Despite a rocky start –– in the first challenge, Alexander and Martha didn’t finish a custom built-in for the master bedroom –– they wowed judges David Bromstad, Nicole Curtis, and…
Hang your most-often-used coffee cups. To re-create this design, use 2-inch-wide painter’s tape to tape off diagonal stripes that are about 1 inch wide. Fill in the stripes with paint. Peel off the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry. Pegboard that maxes out every inch of wall space is a super-economical way to boost storage in even the tiniest of kitchens. You can have sheets cut at a hardware store to fit around existing cabinets. Created by Olivia Westbrooks, Liv by Design Interiors Fitted with hanging cups, shelves, and wire baskets, ceilingheight pegboard can transform a nothing wall into a hardworking sewing and crafts station. Mix in mood lifters like plants and family photos alongside thread and scissors. Staples.com and amazon.com both have lots of nifty pegboard…
