Gas prices and insurance rates, along with the EPA’s blossoming emissions standards, were a cataclysmic one, two, three punch, putting a boa constrictor grip on the performance car market that had flourished just a few years before. Popular models were being cut, or even worse, turned into detuned daily drivers, declawed, and stripped of their once infamous powertrains. However, it wasn’t quite over yet in 1972. WORLDWIDE AUBURN ACTION Worldwide Auctioneers completed The Auburn Auction 2023 over Labor Day weekend with 275 vehicles coming up for bidding. When the final hammer fell, the auction tallied total sales of $18.5 million, with an 80-percent sell-through. Nearly 50 of the lots were American muscle cars and among them was a 1965 Dodge Coronet A990 lightweight two-door sedan. It featured the correct date-coded Hemi V-8 and was restored to nearly its original condition inside and out. It was minimally altered and had all its factory body panels (acid dipped), glass (Corning lightweight), radiator, exhaust, muffler, and 727 TorqueFlite transmission. The bumpers were replaced and replated and the door cards were also replaced. The lightweights are rare — this one is thought to be one of only 101 made and…
