IN THE MARCH ISSUE (HMM #187) we did an installment in our series of Chevelle project stories covering the new exhaust system to complement the new 427 crate engine. The system was a kit from Pypes Performance Exhaust, and one of the features it included was an X-pipe crossover joining the left and right sides of the system. We briefly covered the advantages of an X-pipe in that story, describing how the design has been shown to enhance exhaust scavenging in performance applications, where the flow of spent gases in the system can be directed to help pull exhaust out of the engine’s cylinders. AFTER A HUMBLE launch in the 1958 Edsel, Ford’s FE engine family — “FE” stood for Ford Edsel — became the company’s stalwart big-block platform for the Sixties, including the 406- and 427-cubic-inch powerhouses that drove Ford’s early Super Stock efforts, and later, the 428-inch Cobra Jet that set the street and strip alight at the height of the muscle car era. The FE engine family’s lifespan was comparatively brief. Eclipsed by the 385-series-based 429 and 460 engines that became Ford’s go-to big-block platform by the early Seventies, the FEs lasted in passenger cars until 1971 and in trucks until about 1978, for a 20-year run. 2019 PITTSBURGH GRAND PRIX TO HONOR SHELBY Now in its 37th year, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is a 10-day extravaganza of motorsports and classic cars, offering something of interest for nearly all. The 2019 PVGP, which runs from July 11 to 21, will honor Shelby as its featured marque, playing host to national conventions for the Shelby American Automobile Club and Team Shelby. Pittsburgh is a fitting location to host a gathering of Shelby automobiles, since several early Cobras were assembled there by Ed Hugus at his European Cars dealership. My story seems typical of many I read in your magazine: young soldier in Vietnam dreaming of buying a muscle car upon returning stateside, saving money ($135 a month in my case), using the car as a regular daily driver in all weather, trading it in for a more “responsible” family sedan after marriage and kids, and missing the car every day thereafter. OWNING AND PRESERVING ANY VEHICLE for 52 years is a highly commendable endeavor. Paul Meyer, a retired high school business and marketing teacher from Dayton, Ohio, has held the title to this 1967 GTO convertible since its odometer read “00009.” But this story almost went very differently. Paul had been impressed by two fullsize Oldsmobiles his older brother had owned, so his first choice for a new car would have been a 1967 Starfire convertible. Only Oldsmobile never produced one. Olds had retired the convertible version of its Starfire after 1965 and discontinued the Starfire nameplate entirely after 1966. IN 1966, BILL LESTER might have been the luckiest high-school grad in Phoenix. He was given, as a graduation present, a slightly used 1965 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 four-speed. Not one like the one seen here, but this very 4-4-2. Now, lots of kids were given muscle cars for particular festive occasions (16th birthday, high school or college graduation, etc), or sometimes for no occasion at all. IF EVER A CAR DIDN’T NEED advertising, it would be the Mustang. Word of mouth about the little coupe (and convertible) was rampant, and if the cover of Time didn’t suggest it, the stampedes in the streets and the fat dealer profits told Ford that it had something good on its hands. Yet Ford resisted the urge to save its ad budget, insisting on advertising the Mustang everywhere, until no American eyeball could avoid its ubiquity. Those early ads were very lifestyle-y, concentrating more on the footloose and fancy-free feeling of a rebodied Falcon than the actual performance. In the mid-1980s, I regularly read the car magazines, and I was particularly impressed by the IROC-Z, which was hailed as the ultimate third-gen Camaro. I promised myself that I would buy one once I graduated with my engineering degree, but that plan was postponed when I decided to stay at M.I.T. as a graduate student. HELLEPHANT STAMPEDE On April 26 (aka “4/26,” or “Hemi Day”), Mopar Performance announced that it was taking orders for the Hellephant crate engine. Now, if you missed it at SEMA last year, the Hellephant is a supercharged 1,000-hp, 950-lb-ft V-8 that costs almost $30K. And doesn’t come with a warranty. Or a car around it. (Or the “plug and play” engine kit that lets it run in any pre-1976 vehicle for another $2,265.) WHEN DODGE INTRODUCED the Challenger to take on the Mustang and Camaro in 1970, it offered a slew of trim levels, from base to near-luxury SE to high-performance R/T to competition-spec T/A. Engine options in the brochure ranged from a couple of Slant Sixes to two-barrel small- and big-block V-8s to a host of high-performance engines, including a 340 four-barrel, 340 Six Pack (T/A only), 440 Six Pack, 426 Hemi, and a 383 four-barrel, the latter standard kit on the R/T models. You could even get a Challenger R/T convertible. All told, Dodge made just 963 R/T convertibles for 1970, so the company dropped the droptop R/T option for 1971, along with the T/A and its trick 340 Six Pack. THE YEARS 1958 TO 1961 were bleak ones for those who liked fast cars, but preferred to purchase speed rather than build it in the garage. While 1957 had seen the new OHV V-8s taken to their pinnacle — Ford alone had both dual quads and a supercharger available — it all came crashing down at the behest of the Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The AMA members agreed among themselves to abandon speed and power as marketing tools and to stop supporting racing activities. From that point forward, so the theory went, power developments would be aimed at providing under-stressed engines for hauling around street-driven passenger cars. This year, the Scottsdale-based firm celebrated its 19th annual sale by offering 619 vehicular lots over the span of five days (January 16-20) on the grounds of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. American muscle cars were a hallmark of the company when it was founded and have remained an integral part of its sale catalogs since. FROM MISSISSIPPI TO MISSOURI, SALES RING UP IN APRIL At its most recent event, held April 12 and 13 at the Branson Convention Center in southern Missouri, The Branson Auction found new homes for 128 of 181 lots, for a sell-through rate of 71 percent. Total sales of vehicles tallied $2.66 million, including buyers’ fees. Though the sale was topped by a 1930 Rolls-Royce, seven of the top-20 cars were muscle cars; eight if you count hot rods. The top Detroit V-8 model sold was a restored 1963 Corvette coupe with a non-original 327 that sold for $99,000.
