Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been declared legally single by a judge in Los Angeles, despite a divorce not yet being granted. Under the ruling, which is known as a bifurcated judgment, Angelina has also dropped Pitt from her surname.
Their children Maddox,17, Pax,15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 12, and ten-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, will continue to use the name Jolie-Pitt.
It is unclear what needs to be resolved before Hollywood stars Angelina, 43, and Brad, 55, can agree on their divorce.
The couple met in 2003 but did not marry until 2014, only to separate two years later.
The drawn-out custody battle means they have not yet formally divorced, although they have agreed to co-parent, ending the need for a trial.
