Acting was a more-or-less accidental career choice for James Nesbitt, when he went to drama school as “a really good way of meeting girls”. The Northern Irish actor started work the day after he left and has barely stopped, appearing in award-winning comedy Cold Feet and doing darker TV turns in Murphy’s Law, Jekyll and as maverick neurosurgeon Monroe.
Now, at 48, he plays lovable dwarf Bofur, one of the 12 companions of Bilbo Baggins in Sir Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of The Hobbit, filmed on location in New Zealand.
