When designer Richard Quinn recently asked her to sing at his AW23 show it was a collaboration of two great British creative forces: “Richard used a song of mine in his virtual show online during the pandemic and it was so amazing. He then invited me to perform at his last show at London Fashion Week with an orchestra. Relinquishing the ties of her urbane life in London and then Brighton, Gabrielle Aplin moved to Glastonbury in Somerset during the pandemic: two life-changing experiences that contributed to the back-to-basics layers of her fourth studio album, Phosphorescent. The move was triggered by a feeling of, “Why are we here? We don’t need to be”. Then, when her dad found a befitting property next to a dairy farm and surrounded by apple orchards, her and boyfriend, Alfie Hudson-Taylor of Irish duo Hudson Taylor, decided to go for it, taking their three Boston terriers with them. “It was just one of those mad opportunities,” she tells us when we chat. “I thought, let’s just do it and see what happens. GOOD TO GLOW Self-tan is notoriously tricky to get right and a faux glow turns into a faux pas with the wrong application. “The most common mistake people make is applying too much tan,” says St Tropez tanning expert Michaella Bolder. “A couple of light layers is better than one thick heavy layer.” This helps to keep the coverage even. For trouble spots, like wrists, knuckles and ankles, moisturiser is essential: “Always put a generous amount on these areas – almost too much,” says Michaella. “This dilutes the DHA in the tan so it doesn’t develop as intensely.” Another pro tip is to use the residual tan on your mitt, rather than applying a fresh pump of product to these areas. SPOT OF BOTHER Statistics show that 43% of women are concerned about hyperpigmentation. Triggers include hormonal fluctuations and skin trauma but, according to dermatologist Dr Tiina Meder, “The most common cause is exposure to UV”. “Melanocytes are cells within the structure of the skin that produce a pigment called melanin,” explains Dr Meder. “Melanin is a protective substance that absorbs ultraviolet rays and fights free radicals, so melanin synthesis is actually a healthy process.” Pigmentation or hyperpigmentation (terms are used interchangeably) is simply where, “Melanin has been produced excessively or spread unevenly,” says dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne. Prevention is key, so wear SPF daily. When Australian travel influencer Lauren Bullen decided to make Bali her permanent residence after renting villas on the island for two years, her and ex-partner Jack Morris began looking at properties to buy. “With the price of rent in Bali, we found it could be a great investment,” she tells us.
