For Sunyuul Yie, her first shoe experience is still a vivid memory. When visiting a department store with her mother as a young child, a fashion show played out on monitors. “The back of the models’ shoes is still a clear image in my head. Lingerie designer Damaris Evans is sitting in the bathroom of her 500-year-old French farmhouse, when we speak on Zoom. Before releasing Speak Your Mind, the biggest debut album of 2018, Anne-Marie (Rose Nicholson) had already had her fair share of the spotlight. In 2014 she joined Rudimental’s band for two years, she toured with Ed Sheeran and, in 2016, provided vocals for Clean Bandit’s Rockabye, which became the Christmas number one. However, with the success came the anxiety, something she says she’s tackled for years. When Gianfranco Ferré, Christian Dior’s creative director from 1989 to 1997, known as ‘the architect of fashion’, designed a perfectly-formed square bag with two neatly rounded top handles, he unofficially and affectionately named it Chouchou, which means favourite in French.
