Carat London is taking on the luxury jewellery brands at their own game – and winning. When we arrive at Sophia Webster’s whitewashed studio on the third floor of an east London warehouse, the designer greets us beneath a pastel-coloured floral archway that is permanently positioned in the entrance – a keepsake from her wedding to company CEO Bobby Stockley in 2013. There’s so much more to Ukrainian electro pop duo and models Sofia and Anna Kuprienka than meets the eye. After moving to London (without parents) aged 16 the identical twins released the track Fahrenheit on YouTube in June 2013. The following year they sent out a cover of Bob Marley’s Get Up Stand Up – in solidarity to their family and friends suffering atrocities back home, which earned them an invite onto BBC’s Newsnight. Rosemary Ferguson was discovered aged 15 by iconic fashion photographer Corinne Day in McDonald’s. Greta Bellamacina is not just multi-faceted, she’s also very polite – something we discover when she bounds through the doors of her London agency (Viva Model Management) to meet us. “I’m so sorry I’m late,” she says, out of breath from the six flights of stairs – although it’s only by four minutes. Lake Como has been on my bucket list for years, so I jumped at the opportunity, linen and loafers in hand, to join Mr & Mrs Smith and some of my favourite fellow bloggers for a few extremely spoiling days at the opulent Villa Sola Cabiati. Rarely has fashion stepped into the spotlight amid such a global climate of social, cultural, environmental, economic and political change. The collections unfurled against the backdrop of a debate surrounding gender equality, diversity and female empowerment, not to mention the issues of e-tail vs retail, climate change, plastic pollution and fast fashion vs investment dressing. No surprise, then, that the AW18 catwalks were a melting pot of familiar tradition and far-reaching trends, playing out on a loop that offered a continuous clash of contrasts. Restaurant “Lemonia in Primrose Hill, it’s so great I’ve been going for years, it feels like its stuck in a time warp, the menu is always the same. The Greek waiters are in their 60s or 70s and they still work really hard. There’s just something I love about that restaurant.” Pub “The Fitzroy Tavern on Charlotte Street is a really cheap Samuel Smith pub, but Dylan Thomas used to write there – as well as all these other Fitzrovia writers and poets. Inspired by botanical illustrations and graphic constructivism that mirror his previous collections, fashion designer Christopher Kane has designed five rugs (and one cushion) for textile specialists, The Rug Company. His inaugural collection, which comes in both natural smoky greys and dusky nudes, or vibrant yellows and bright greens, are handcrafted from silks yarns and Tibetan wools using age-old weaving techniques in Kathmandu, Nepal.
