‘In 2009, I was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, a tumour of the pituitary gland. By the time I went into hospital, I had end-stage diabetes, muscle wasting to the point where I couldn’t get up the stairs without using my arms, osteoporosis, a hairy face, memory loss and mania. To treat the tumour, they drilled into my skull and took it out but, at one point, if my potassium levels had dropped a fraction more, I’d have been a goner.
‘I didn’t walk out of the hospital and think, “Oh my god, I’ve got a new life”. It took a while, but I did realise this was my second chance. I quit my job as a teacher and joined an overland trip from the UK to Cape Town, South Africa.…
