April 22nd was an early morning. We arrived at the harbor and began loading the boat with coolers of ice, food for the day, poles, all the lucky lures, and team PUALELE: Kalei Lu‘uwai, Mogul Lu‘uwai, Kawaikaunu Lu‘uwai, Pohai Kaikala, Kanoe Pacheco, Wahinehula Ka‘eo and Angel Melone. On this brisk morning, the load-up was fairly quick as we wanted to launch as soon as we could. It was a kukolu moon and dark as we left Ma‘alaea Harbor. The winds began to turn on just outside the harbor as we set out, most likely welcoming other captains to fish towards Lana‘i side. Pualele started the day following a southern route.
