A new comprehensive study found that the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) and development of large static oceanic no-take marine protected areas (MPAs) in the tropical Pacific do not have discernible conservation benefits for Pacific skipjack and bigeye tuna, two of the most important tropical tuna species to U.S. fisheries. The study published in Frontiers in Marine Science was led by world-renowned tuna expert Dr. John Hampton of the Pacific Community (SPC) and a team of tuna scientists and oceanographers. It analyzed the efficacy of closing the PIPA on the conservation of tropical tunas since the area’s prohibition of commercial fishing in 2015. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announced an open fishing season for rainbow trout in the Koke‘e Public Fishing Area (PFA) on Kaua‘i, beginning Saturday, June 17, 2023. Anglers may fish daily from June 17, to September 30, 2023. Fishing hours will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trout are found in streams and ditch systems within the PFA, but fishing success has been poor there due to discontinuation of stream stocking some years ago. Over 95% of the catch now occurs from the Pu‘u Lua Reservoir, where the stocking program continues. Last year, 3,033 anglers caught 19,500 trout at the Pu‘u Lua reservoir. Trout fishing is expected to be successful this year because 25,800 young trout were stocked in the reservoir. Anglers must have a valid…

There are no hard, fast rules for the preparation of ‘oama and hahalalu. Some cooks scale them, others don’t; some cut the heads off, others don’t; some debone them, others don’t; some gut the fish, and the more adventurous say they don’t. Cooks do agree on one thing: because the fish are so small, the easiest, no fuss way to prepare them is to fry them ‘til crispy-skinned and then serve. Silver-skinned ‘oama and hahalalu are the babies, or fingerlings, of weke and akule respectively. Most are the length of your finger or, at best, a dollar bill. My dad, Richard Nishimura Jr. has been around the sea his whole life. From simple fishing to deep diving catching uluas, marlins, and many other fish around the islands. After adulthood hit and he became a father, fishing took a backseat. It wasn’t until 2017 when he rented a house by the ocean that he decided to start fishing again. My Dad started with a small kayak and a simple setup. Knowing my dad, I knew this was just the beginning, and sure enough he slowly started upgrading his ‘watercraft.’ He now has an inflatable boat with the best rods and equipment possible so he can after the biggest fish possible, including marlins, mahimahi, ‘ahi, and aku. Local citizens continue to step up to report potential resource violations to DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE). A tip on Friday, May 26 led DOCARE officers to Ala Moana Beach Park where they observed a fisher in possession of a small-eye throw net with a mesh size less than two inches. Officers found the throw net contained approximately 287 small sardines. The Ewa Beach resident was issued a citation for illegal throw nets. The net was seized as evidence and the sardines were returned to the ocean. His court date is set for June 30, 2023. Small-eye throw nets are commonly used for catching bait fish. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, in-person fishing tournaments in Hawai‘i have started up again. The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council’s Hawai‘i Advisory Panel (AP) took advantage of this and developed a brief voluntary anonymous survey to take the pulse of the fishing community. Until mid-November 2022, there have been 37 responses (summarized below) gathered on Maui and the Big Island. Information was gathered on a range of topics including fishing ko‘a, cultural take of honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle), fishing and access for the proposed Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) national marine sanctuary, fishermen observations, data collection and other fishery issues. With new ocean spatial management actions and development on the horizon potentially further closing off areas to fishing, the Hawai‘i AP launched a participatory mapping project called “FishMaps” to characterize…

Hawai‘i Island Spring Turkey Hunt Results The 45-day-long Hawaii Island Spring Turkey Hunting Season commenced on March 1 and closed April 15. It is a tagged hunt, i.e., a purchased turkey tag must be in possession while hunting and said tag must be affixed to any bird taken. A maximum of (3) non-transferable tags may be purchased seasonally at a cost of $5 each for Hawaii residents and $20 each for non-resident hunters. The current seasonal hunting results compiled from hunter harvest reports submitted at the public hunting areas of Mauna Kea and Puu Waa Waa are up top, along with comparative values for the preceding 8 years. I noticed on the weather forecast that a nice weekend was coming up, so I texted my usual fishing partner but he said he already had plans. The much-anticipated community coral reef cookbook will be available for free by the end of July! With more than 50 recipes from local lawai‘a across the Hawaiian Islands, this cookbook was a true community effort. But this isn’t your average cookbook. This is a cookbook for sustainable fishing, combining traditional Hawaiian uses with marine science. Aside from ono recipes, the book includes information on more than 30 commonly caught coral reef species. Things like a fish’s size at reproduction, maximum age, and ecosystem function are combined with fishing regulations, state catch records, and descriptions of traditional Hawaiian uses and preparation for each species. 1.81-lb Monchong (Sickle Pomfret) I was born and raised into a fishing family on the island of Kauai. I’ve done a lot of different types of fishing, from boat fishing, trolling, to bait casting from the shore, spearfishing, and I do also include throwing net. I’ve most recently been throwing net a lot more. My uncle makes throw nets and so I’ve been using his traditional hand sewn throw nets to catch fish, and to practice the traditional ways of Hawaiian style fishing. The art of patience and endurance, catching fish with a cast net is challenging, tiring and also very connecting with the ocean. GOLDEN AHOLEHOLE The plans were set. I was invited to join Doug, my high school classmate, and his diving partner to go spearing in the waters of the harbor after school. Both Doug and his friend were experienced divers and members of the high school swim team. I was a newcomer to the team and my spearing experiences were limited to the safe and shallow waters of Waikiki Beach, so this would be something different. It was a short ride from our Kalihi neighborhood to Sand Island Road and to their “secret” location. Our object was the deepwater aholehole. We ended up fighting some mean current but on our first dive, my uncle shot his nice omilu. His shaft had bent a little and he asked me if I wanted to use his gun and try for an ulua. I took the opportunity and was lucky enough to spot three uluas in a cave. I took my shot on the first one that gave me a chance.
