The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has purchased the first-ever coral reef insurance policy in the United States—for the benefit of Hawai‘i’s reefs. The policy will provide funding for rapid repair and restoration of coral reefs across Hawai‘i following hurricane or tropical storm damage. In 2019, TNC and partners developed the world’s first reef-insurance policy specifically around hurricane damage, a major risk to coral reefs, in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Proceeds from that policy were used to repair damage from Hurricane Delta. Since then, the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) Fund, working in collaboration with Willis Tower Watson (WTW)’s Climate and Resilience Hub, has built out a parametric insurance program across the full extent of the MAR from southern Mexico through Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. The Waikīkī-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area (SFMA) on O‘ahu will be closed to fishing for one year, from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2023. The SFMA encompasses the nearshore waters between the ‘Ewa wall of the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and extends from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards, or to the edge of the fringing reef if one occurs beyond 500 yards out. The area is closed to fishing during odd-numbered years. The periodic closure of the Waikīkī-Diamond Head SFMA to fishing is intended to give fish a break from fishing pressure. It was early Sunday morning, and I was headed to Kapapala Ranch to try to connect with some game birds. My neighbor, Jurek, was along for the ride and the chance to get some fresh air. Yankee, my German Wirehair, was crammed in his kennel in back. We made good time travelling south on Highway 11, arriving at Kapapala Ranch a little after 6 AM. I returned to O‘ahu to run the 12th Annual Outrigger Canoe Club Fishing Tournament, after having to move off-island in 2022. The thought of giving up the fishing tournament was weighing heavy on my mind. I have really enjoyed building a successful event over the last four years and being able to help create a lasting memory for families and friends, and it wasn’t something I was willing to give up. The success of the event has been a combination of an outstanding committee, Outrigger Canoe Club staff, generous donors and the club’s members and their ‘ohana and friends. Hilo Trollers Tourney Updates Small fishing clubs that run tournaments struggle between keeping membership and entry fees low and awarding good-enough prizes to keep members happy, so they keep returning to compete. Unlike some one-shot big money “jackpot” tournaments, the Trollers are not profit-making and have always tried to focus on friendship, mutual support and sharing the fun of friendly competition. Multiple awards are given out in every tournament and captains compete to accumulate points in official weights to receive prestigious year end awards. Also, unlike many clubs, the Trollers run a slate of monthly tournaments through the summer trolling season beginning in May and culminating with the two-day Labor Day Tournament in September. Bird Dog Finds First ‘Akē‘akē For the first time, the night-flying endangered seabird ‘akē‘akē has been photographed. This elusive bird’s burrow was found by a local bird dog named Slater. The footage shows “the fluffy fledgling emerging from its high-elevation burrow on Mauna Loa about a month before the eruption began, an exciting first for Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park,” says HVNP spokesperson Jessica Ferracane. The ‘akē‘akē burrow was sniffed out in September by Slater of Hawai‘i Detector Dogs. Slater was trained and handled by biologist Dr. Michelle Reynolds. Following Slater’s nose, biologist Charlotte Forbes Perry, with help from the HVNP-permitted team from the University of Hawai‘i Pacific Cooperative Unit, observed the chick before it left the burrow. The 2022-23 Gamebird Hunting Season drew to a close on Sunday, January 29. My wife’s son Jayson and I, along with Yankee, my German Wirehair, checked in at Kapapala Ranch at 6 AM and set out on what has become our standard route toward Domingo Corner. Having had some success on a prior outing bagging a turkey some ways in, we stopped short of the location and peered ahead under still dark skies to determine if the flock had once again left the roost, presenting a shooting opportunity as they paraded in a long line across the pasture border ahead. I have caught a lot of good fish including this 6 lb Papio, 19” o’io and this huge ‘ama’ama. The 6 lb Papio was my biggest Papio catch to date. I caught it on a live mullet at night using 30 lb test 6’ leader with a circle hook. I entered it into the Daiwa Obake Shootout and won second place in the keiki 9-12-year-old division. The o’io was caught using squid with a 2 oz lead and 3’ of 25 lb test leader just after breakfast. The following weekend, I went out to my dock to check the conditions and I…
