They say lightning never strikes in the same place twice. Well, this time it struck not just once or twice but three times! Sailfish are about as rare as lightning strikes here in sunny Kailua-Kona. But in mid-July, on my first time out for sailfish, I lucked into a triple-header. I was fishing on the TAIPAN, a beautiful 50-foot 2005 Hatteras with Capt. I hadn’t caught anything weighing more than 5 lbs until the morning of June 1st, when I went over to Goat Island looking for something to get my blood flowing. “Maybe my first ulua this year, that would be nice.” Wishful thinking on my part, trying to stay positive. Conditions were really nice, with light trades and 2- to 3-foot surf. I started on the Kahuku side using a topwater Pop Queen 40-gram Malolo floating lure, on my small-game reel: a 4500 Penn, with 30 lb J-Line to barrel swivel to a 40-lb J-line fluorocarbon leader. After a few casts, I saw a dark shadow appear from the dark depths of the ocean. Within seconds, the shadow began darting directly toward my lure. When I saw the sheer size of this dump truck, I knew she was going to destroy me. She looked me in the eyes and said, “good luck,” and then demolished my lure, leaving me with nothing but the remnants of a splash and an overwhelming amount of panic and fear. Ulua are often sought after as the holy grail of shoreline fishing within Hawai‘i. Fishers camp out for days for a chance to land one of these massive fish. But did you know that basic lifehistory parameters such as age, growth and size/age at maturity were largely unknown? That is, until Poseidon Fisheries Research got some help from local fishers to solve these questions back in 2019. Based on all the samples fishers provided us, we determined that 50 percent of female ulua reach sexual maturity (also known as L50) at 24 inches (roughly 8.9 lbs), or in about 4.4 years. Male ulua reach maturity earlier at 18 inches (4.2 lbs) or 2.8 years. The oldest ulua we sampled was 31 years old! That means that some of these fish…

Hawai‘i’s bottomfish fishery does not jeopardize the continued existence of oceanic whitetip sharks (OWTs) listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). That was the conclusion that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reached in its final biological opinion (BiOp) issued on August 26th. The BiOp is an outcome of a formal consultation process for federal actions to ensure that the action does not jeopardize ESA-listed species. The Hawai‘i bottomfish fishery is co-managed by the federal and state governments, with the federal side being managed by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and by NMFS under the Council’s Hawai‘i Archipelagic Fishery Ecosystem Plan. I was stoked to get my new custom rod from Adrenaline Rods and eager to test it out. They’ve been making me rods for a few years now, designed specifically for kayak fishing. The new rod I got is a step up from my lighter rods, but a step down from my heavy ones, so it’s right in the middle. It is 6 feet 9 inches tall, takes 30- to 80-lb line and has fast action and XH power. When I first started kayak fishing I liked shorter rods, but now I’m finding the longer ones give me more of what I need. The Hawai‘i Island 2022-2023 Game Bird Hunting Season opens Saturday, November 5th, and runs for 3 months, concluding Sunday, January 29, 2023. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources permits licensed hunters to train/exercise their gun dogs in the Mauna Kea Ka‘ohe Game Management Area during the two months preceding the season, beginning September 1st. The following are potentially bad weather events, listed in order of decreasing expected occurrence: (1) northwest swell and surf (2) gusty trade winds (3) weak cold front (4) Kona low (5) north swell and surf (6) hurricane.
