Back in April, Cascadia Research Collective’s Robin Baird challenged Hawai‘i fishers to join the Cascadia community science effort to photograph and catalog toothed whales and dolphins in Hawaiian waters. Splash! answered the call. It’s easy to do community offshore science and you can, too. The first video we sent was identified by Cascadia as images of bottlenose dolphins. Companies involved in outdoor recreation are banding together to research methods and solutions for tackling invasive aquatic species nationwide. They’ve formed a commission to examine current efforts and identify additional solutions, and they intend to share the work of this new commission to the U.S. Congress and the federal government next year. The goal: Creation and passage of comprehensive legislation that will manage and eliminate these invasive aquatic species more effectively. At press time, the first meeting of the new commission was slated to take place in mid-July during the annual International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades show in Orlando. The newly formed commission brings together biologists, environmentalists, policymakers and resource managers to assess existing reduction efforts—and to identify solutions that will be even more effective. ‘Ahi Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore Tuna, Big-Eye Tuna, and Skipjack Tuna `Ahi is one of Hawai‘i’s favorite fish. A member of the tuna family, it is flavorful without being too strong for most fish eaters. Along with snappers, ‘ahi plays an important role in our holiday celebrations, especially as many honor their guests by serving decorative platters of thin, raw slices of this red-meat fish. Although ‘ahi is by definition yellowfin tuna (also called Allison tuna), its name is also used to collectively identify all of Hawai‘i’s larger varieties of tuna, including not only yellowfin, but also big-eye and albacore. ‘Ahi are most plentiful from late spring through September. Freediving and spearfishing have long been a part of the Hawaiian tradition and nearly every day of the year, people are in the water doing freedive training, spearing and just enjoying the water. Given its year-round conditions, the state is one of the top 10 locations in the world for freediving, and many of the world’s best divers can be found training in Hawai‘i. Gov. David Ige has signed into law a Senate bill that bans the use of drones to carry baited hooks and lines out to sea when fishing. The bill attracted attention and testimony—pro and con—throughout the 2022 session of the state Legislature. As originally written, the bill also would have stopped fishers from using drones to spot fish beyond the line of sight. Following impassioned testimony, legislators modified the bill to allow what they call “reconnaissance” to continue unchanged. That protection is carried forward in the new law, which is known as Act 207. Under the new law, which went into effect as soon as Ige signed it on June 27, fishers cannot fish with drones “on, in or near state marine waters” unless they receive permission from the state…

After you’ve bested your fish and brought it aboard, it’s time to fly your flags. There’s a certain protocol to displaying fish flags, and we offer the following pointers so you can concentrate on seeking out your next catch. Flags are flown from the starboard (right) outrigger. Did you know that any time a kayak, canoe, SUP, dive float, or dinghy is found drifting in the ocean, the Coast Guard immediately launches helicopters or boats to begin searching? Sometimes, responders find a person or people in the water who get the help they need, but most of the time, it’s a simple case of lost gear. These sightings happen three or four times a week in Hawai‘i! If the Coast Guard can reach the owner of the gear to confirm no one is lost, it won’t have to launch a helicopter or boat. This keeps that helicopter or boat available for use in a true emergency. Enjoy summer in Hawai‘i waters. August is the warmest month over land and in the water. No Kona storms or cold fronts are expected. Replacing these two wintertime storms could be storms born over the warm tropical waters—tropical storms and hurricanes. August is the favored month for these storms. Over the past years , these storms have appeared in Hawai‘i waters so it will be prudent to listen to the National Weather Service marine forecasts before venturing into the water. Weather satellite pictures spot these storms. Trade winds will be the common feature as they persist through the month.
