The 2022 Hawai‘i Island Spring Turkey Hunt concluded April 15, following a 46-day run. The Spring Hunt differs in both methodology and take from the Fall Game Bird Season, during which turkeys are also hunted. During the Fall Season, when all listed species of game birds may be harvested, hunters traverse open fields, putting hidden birds to flight with the aid of pointing or flushing dogs. One turkey of either sex may be taken per day, with no seasonal limit. In the Spring Season, timed to occur during the turkey breeding cycle, only bearded males (toms) may be taken. It is a tagged hunt, with a seasonal limit of three birds. Use of dogs is not permitted. In the Spring Season, the conventional method of take is for a camouflaged…

Caught my first ulua with the help of my son. He and I were dunking for ‘ōio with no luck, so I said, “Let’s go look for live bait.” He managed to catch a perfect-sized kūpīpī with his hand pole, so we moved down the beach and threw it into the water. In about 10 minutes, my pole bent over and started screaming! At first, I wasn’t sure what it was until I felt the headshakes. The fish ran across a channel and used the current against me, but we managed to land it in about 15 minutes. The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council is tasked with managing the nation’s marine fishery resources. Under the Magnuson-Stevens Act, which created the eight regional councils, management decisions are made with a bottom-up approach, and community input is highly valued. The Council engages fishing communities in many ways, and an integral part of this strategy is to support island coordinators in American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). In addition to regional advisory groups, having staff on these islands allows the Council to effectively address local needs and educate the public about important fishery-management issues. THE STINGRAY AND ME It was a long drive to the North Shore. I was invited to tag along by classmate Doug and his friend Ed to go spearing on the reefs near Mokule‘ia. Doug was a strong swimmer, a member of the high school swim team and an experienced diver. His friend was also a swim team member. It is unlikely that strong Kona winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain will occur. Although it is possible for a tropical storm to appear in Hawai‘i waters as the warmer months approach, the odds are against it. Gusty trades have made their presence felt since March and are expected to continue in June. With trades on almost all the days of the month, gusty trades are expected on five to 10 days. Two Hawai‘i Anglers Await IGFA Review of Record-Setting Pacific Bonefish Catches Not one but two Hawai‘i anglers have submitted documentation to the IGFA for catches that if certified would set two new world records for Pacific bonefish. “As many local fishers know,” says HFN Executive Publisher Carrie Johnston, “it is quite an achievement to just prepare for and get a catch qualified for consideration for an IGFA record.” The IGFA announced last month that Hawai‘i angler Duane Fukumoto had submitted a 2.58-kilogram (5-lb, 11-ounce) Pacific bonefish to potentially set the IGFA 1-kg (2-lb) Line Class World Record for the species. Duane was wading the flats off Honolulu when the bonefish struck his live crab. The fight lasted 30 minutes as he battled the bonefish across the flats on the light…

This type of rig is for shoreline fishing. Dunking rigs are used primarily in sandy areas, or where patches of sand are available. Sandy areas are best so you won’t get stuck in any rocks. When casting out your rig, aim your lead into the sandy area. If your lead does get stuck right after you cast, it’s okay. You can leave it there in hopes a fish will soon come and take your bait, and either break the lead line or pull the lead out and you can fight the fish. Depth of water doesn’t matter too much just as long as you can see patches of sand which is where you want to cast your lead into. Ideally the lead will act as an anchor in the sand…

A‘u Pacific Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Spearfish & Sailfish Broadbill swordfish, or shutome, are the main target of the commercial longline fleet. Shutome is a high-profile fish on the auction block, popular with chefs and home cooks. It is mild yet tastes rich, and chefs appreciate its adaptability to various cooking methods. The firm flesh takes well to grilling or broiling, sautéing and stir-frying but it can also be braised and poached successfully. Shutome is a migratory fish available year-round but most common from April through July. Sportfishermen practice catch and release of marlin and spearfish as an important conservation measure.
