■ Wow - What a beast. Caught this ulua shorecasting on the North Shore of the Big Island during the low tide, at 9:30 pm. There was a 3/4 moon, and we were using papio for live bait, on a 16/0 hook with a wire leader, and Ande 80-lb test on a Newell 55, with a 13-foot PENN Carnage 2. ■ Hooked up to both this 103.8-lb and a 56.8-lb ulua out in Hamakua, with Chucky Balucan and family there to witness and assist. Hilo Trollers News The Hilo Trollers’ first tournament of the 2022 season has been scheduled for Sunday, May 1, weather permitting. Membership and entry forms are available at supporting tackle shops S. Tokunaga Store and J. Hara Store. Completed forms are due by 4 p.m. on the Friday before the tournament, so for May that is Friday, April 29. If small-craft advisories are posted after 6 p.m. on the Saturday before the tournament (April 30), the tournament will be postponed until the following Sunday. ■ I haven’t fished since October, so I’ve been stuck on 298 ulua catches since then. At the last minute, I decided to relax and take a break from work and jiu-jitsu. At around 9 p.m., I took a crazy strike that bent my rock spike. I automatically thought it was a shark because of its strength, so I didn’t really get too excited. Instead, I just let it run and hoped it would cut the line. It ran for 20 to 30 seconds, and then the line went slack. I automatically assumed a shark had cut the line. As I was reeling in the slack, I was surprised to still see my bait. I was even more surprised that the bait had no cuts and was just mushy. I…

■ The REEL HOOKER moved to the top of Lahaina’s 2022 blue-marlin leaderboard with a 589.4-pounder brought in by Capt. Kihe and Capt. Joel Cota. They were on an afternoon four-hour charter, heading out to the 100-fathom ledge off Olowalu. Other boats in the area were working a floater with several dozen mahimahi around it outside of Kaho‘olawe. Kihe found the floater, but the mahi were being very finicky, probably because they had been stung by the other boats. The captains chummed and baited the school, trying everything they could to get a bite. After working the floater for a while with no bites, they decided to head back to the ledge. ■ Fishermen have raised concerns for years about the increased incidence of shark depredation in small-boat fisheries in Hawai‘i. Fishing for Deep-Seven bottomfish species, uku and some pelagic species like mahimahi and ono has been plagued by shark depredation. All fishermen haul up are heads or fish with large chunks taken out. High depredation rates affect the economics of a commercial fishing operation. The balance of the costs and benefits of fishing is tipped toward a revenue loss when predators are literally eating into the profit. Concern about the effects of low-yield trips due to shark depredation goes beyond fishery economics; it may also affect the assessment of fish stock health. ■ The phone started ringing a couple of weeks before the start of Hawai‘i island’s 2022 spring turkey hunt. The first call was from Marlin Dubetz, my bow-hunting friend from Iowa, announcing his planned annual arrival. He said he wanted to set up a sequel to last year’s “Three Amigos!” excursion in which Marlin, now 93-year-old Dick Peters (the “Mongoose Man”) and I toured Mauna Kea to pick up a pig and a nice-sized tom. Boat & Shoreline Tournament Events Plus Beach Clean Up Event ■ Aloha HAWAII FISHING NEWS, I just wanted to share with you a tournament we will be hosting. Poseidon Fisheries Research received a grant through the NOAA Pacific Islands Region Sustainable Recreational and Non-Commercial Fishing Program to put on fishing tournaments geared toward citizen science and bringing fishers together with researchers and management. There will be both boatbased and shoreline based categories so anyone can participate. The boat-based portion will be held Friday, May 13 at Maunalua Bay Beach Park and shoreline (Oahu-wide) will take place May 11-May 13 with the weigh-in also at Maunalua Bay Beach Park from 11a.m.-12:30p.m. (before the boats come in). ■ Zyman Barawis, 37, is a devoted shore fisherman skilled in the art of whipping small artificial baits from the black lava shores of Kailua-Kona. On Tuesday, March 15, he was doing exactly that at some favorite spots in Kailua Bay when he noticed a swirling, dark ball of bait he thought might be halalu being hassled by ulua. It was far out in the bay, but a nearby pier looked like it might get him just close enough for a long cast. He had no idea the surprise that awaited him!
