I went for a quick dive right after school and shot some nice-sized birds (parrotfish), one Joe (Joe Louis goatfish), and my first uku. When I shot the uku, I was originally taking a drop for some big mu that I’d seen. When I was breathing up, my friend Asher tapped me and showed me the uku hanging out with a school of waha-nui. As I was dropping, I was looking for that uku. When I almost reached the bottom, it came in. I went straight to the bottom so I’d have a better shot. I threw out a few grunts, and the uku came to me. I lunged out, the fish turned broadside, and I took my shot. Seeing my shaft hit the mark, I let my gun go…

This day’s catch was on my Diver’s Bucket List: The Tako 10+ Club! It happened on the third dive of the day with Capt. Lionel Keahi. Before he could even slip into the water, I was swimming back to the boat with the first tako clinging onto my back. As Capt. Lionel was wrestling with it on deck, I spotted another hole about 10 yards away from the first one. “Whoa, boulders, volcano…. Ah, not home!” I saw the tako burrowing into the sand under a ledge five feet away. “Hah, gotcha!” Lionel came by just in time to help me knife and bag the second “big boy.” As luck would have it, we got not one, but two tako that weighed 11 and 11.68 lbs! Hilo Trollers News The Hilo Trollers are getting organized for the 2022 tournament season. There will be a 2021 closing of the season and a 2022 season signup on Saturday, April 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Wailoa Boat Ramp. Membership forms, tournament rules and tournament registration forms will be available at that meeting. Spikes in COVID-19 cases prevented the Hilo Trollers from holding their regular banquet and awards ceremony in the fall and their annual spring meeting in January. This means that the surface cold front of winter and the upper trough of summer can “meet” over the islands in April. The result is a few days of bad weather with heavy rain and gusty winds. Howzit. I would like to share a story of a recent dive. It was a beautiful day on the east side of O‘ahu, with light winds, a dropping tide and excellent water clarity. This was our first time taking the kayaks out diving. Our mission was to explore the outer reefs to find tako grounds. The crew for the day consisted of me, my brother Junior, Junior’s son, Preston, and our friend Gilbert. We paddled out, crossing channels and scoping out the reefs. We found a reef that looked promising, so we anchored the kayaks. Junior and I suited up and started diving while Preston and Gilbert fished off the kayaks. On March 5, 2022, I took part in the Hawaii Yacht Club’s Second Annual Kayak Fishing Tournament. Thirty-eight kayakers, men and women, were out on the water doing what they love—catching fish. It started off as a beautiful day with clear skies and calm winds. Many of us were on bait and eager to start fishing to get a head start. It was a tournament, and time was ticking. I managed to get four ‘ōpelu before the bait stopped biting, and I quickly moved far away from the crowd to let out my bait. Nothing bit, so I went to another area but still had no action. In 1980, the state of Hawai‘i implemented a fish aggregating device (FAD) program to promote fishing opportunities statewide. Various types of FADs have been used throughout the Pacific Islands for decades as an effective method to attract pelagic species, like tuna and mahimahi, targeted by commercial and noncommercial fishermen. More recently, agencies and organizations around the Pacific have begun to upgrade their FAD designs to take advantage of technologies able to collect realtime information about ocean conditions such as sea surface temperature, wave height, wind speed and even fish biomass. These devices are referred to as “smart FADs.” The Hawai‘i Advisory Panel (AP) of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (the Council) has been working to establish a community smart FAD that could support cooperative research and provide community…

Trout fishing in the upland forests of Kaua‘i has been enjoyed by families across the islands for more than a century. The first rainbow trout were brought to Kaua‘i in 1920 at the request of Kapa‘a homesteader Elmer Cheatham, who suspected that the cool waters of Kōke‘e might be a suitable habitat for the prized sport fish. The U.S. Fish and Game Commission supported the efforts and assisted Elmer in raising the 50,000 eggs that were shipped from California. The introduction was a success, and the fingerlings were released into streams in the Pu‘u Ka Pele Forest Reserve. Trout fishing was an immediate hit with the public, and word quickly spread about the fantastic fishing opportunities in the misty forests of Kōke‘e. Trout introduction was tried on Maui and the…

The fiscal 2022 upland game bird hunting season began November 6, 2021, and concluded on January 30, 2022. During the available 52-daylong hunting season, a total of 1,929 game birds were reportedly taken in 2,522 hunter trips, for an average seasonal hunter success ratio of 0.76 birds taken per hunter trip made. Erckel’s francolins (1,286), chukers (176), California valley quail (149), and wild turkeys (60 toms and 40 hens) comprised 90 percent of the species harvested. Lesser numbers of black francolins, ring-necked pheasants, kalij pheasants, chukars, grey francolins, melanistic mutant pheasants, sand grouse and a mourning dove rounded out the harvest, in that order of frequency. I had been spearfishing for about five months. I used a three-prong until my second month when I was asked to join a trip to the backside of the island of Moloka‘i. I jumped in the blue water and saw schools of mahimahi and pairs of ono. I swam with two ono for quite some time, maybe 25 minutes, before I finally saw my chance. I shot one ono right in the brain, but with the small gun I was using, the spear didn’t even make it through its skull. Luckily, my buddy was filming, or else no one would have ever believed me. Apex Fishing Charters had an amazing afternoon on the water in Kaua‘i on their vessel GRANDER. A day after the heavy winds moved on that kept us at port for over a week, we charged out of the harbor. Still facing some residual 15-knot winds and 5-foot seas, we weren’t sure how the day was going to go. Approaching the 1000 fathom line, we found a decent bird pile with birds diving. As we made our first pass, we had triple mahimahi that started peeling. We landed two of three. We came back around and did a second pass and had double mahimahi, and landed both. Small Boat Fish Survey Results Preliminary results from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Spring 2021 Hawai‘i Small Boat Survey are now available. Kamanu Rainbow Runner The rainbow runner is considered a special treat by most anglers because it is rarely caught and by fish eaters because it is a tasty fish that is versatile to prepare. Found mostly during the winter months, these sleek, blue-skinned fish average 2 to 6 pounds, but can grow up to 30 pounds in Hawai‘i waters. The scales are small, and the skin can be easily removed in pre-cooking preparation. Frying, baking and steaming are the most common ways to cook this fish, but watch for small bones that sometimes remain, even after the most careful filleting.
