We Need Your Help To Learn More About Oceanic Whitetip Sharks ■ The Joint Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), in partnership with the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is conducting a study to learn about the habitat use and FAD-associative behavior of oceanic whitetip sharks and other shark species. The success of the project, which aims to inform by-catch reduction strategies in industrial and small-scale fisheries, depends largely on the collaborative efforts and local knowledge of Hawai’i’s fishermen. So far, our partnerships with local fishermen and divers have resulted in the tagging of 11 oceanic whitetip sharks. I was out kayak fishing with some buddies in front of Kailua-Kona. After three or four hours of trolling some bait around, I decided to stop in about 350 feet of water and drop some bait to the bottom. ■ It’s easiest to think of the Ala Wai Canal as an aquarium whose water has become polluted. As late as the 1960s, people fished in the Ala Wai Canal and caught any number of edible species. Today, the canal is polluted with the runoff of Manoa and Palolo streams, as well as the “runoff” from the increased population of Waikiki itself. The problem is easily stated. The water in the Ala Wai needs to be replaced. There is a tidal surge that waxes and wanes every six hours. The average high and low tides for Honolulu are predicted to be a medium-high of 1.75 feet and medium-low of 0.3 feet. The surge is now not strong enough to diffuse and clean the waterway, but the tide is consistent and…

■ The largest publicly accessible game-bird hunting area on the island of Hawai‘i extends over the upper slopes of Mauna Kea. It is home to 10 species of game birds, which provide the basis for the annual fall hunting season. Ring-necked, melanistic mutant, and Kalij pheasants; black, gray, and Erckel’s francolins; Japanese and California Valley quail; chukar; and the Rio Grande wild turkey are among the mountain’s avian inhabitants. Popular access to Mauna Kea’s generally steep slopes is via a road that circumnavigates the mountain and requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The eastern terminus is at Hale Pohaku, where it intersects the Mauna Kea Access Road at the 9,000-foot level. ■ On May 29, 2018, the Hawai‘i fishing community came together to support the 2018 Fishing for Hawaii’s Hungry Tournament (FFHHT). Numerous local businesses supported the tournament by generously providing inkind services, door prizes and awards for the participants. Twenty-seven entrants hauled in 800 lbs of fresh fish that were converted into 2,000 meals for the Lanakila Meals on Wheels kupuna, this year’s chosen recipients. This year’s tournament was supported by FFHHT Coordinator Roy Morioka, Waialua Boat Club, Hawaii Fishermen’s Alliance for Conservation and Tradition (HFACT), Lanakila Pacific and the Lanakila Meals on Wheels program. Savvy Investors Mimic Fishermen ■ How many ‘ahi fisherman do you know who don’t believe in moon phase bites? Doug Ramsey of Leuthold Group, a successful Minnesota company known for savvy investments, told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that investors should follow fishermen who know that fish like to bite in days around a full moon or new moon. Since the inception of the Standard and Poor’s 500, the leading index of major companies, it has returned 10.3 percent annually. In the part of the month when fish bite, the return was 19 percent. During the worst fishing days of the month, the payback was just 4.9 percent. The fishy effect for higher stock prices was even greater for high momentum stocks with 33.4 percent during good moons and 13.4…

■ The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) announced that participation in fishing has increased for the second year in a row. Topline numbers from the “Outdoor Foundation Outdoor Recreation Participation Report” and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) “Historical Fishing License Sales Data,” both show growth in fishing participation. Highlights: • Fishing participation rose 4 percent to 49.1 million total participants in 2017. • Fishing license sales increased 1.3 percent in 2017, making for a 4.3-percent increase over the last 10 years. Youth participation: • One million six hundred thousand youths (ages 6 to 17) participated in fishing. • Youth participation was up 5.4 percent from 11 million participants in 2016. Hawai‘i Kayak Fishing at Its Finest ■ On a Saturday morning last month, #808teambloodyyaks member James Semien hooked, fought and ultimately lost at gaff, the fish of a lifetime. It was a day that all friends present would come to consider one of the finest fishing days ever experienced. One may ask how that was even remotely possible when after all, the fish of a lifetime was lost. We’ll come back to that a little later. ■ The Kaka‘ako Kasting Club (KKC) hosted its ninth annual ‘O‘io Invitational Tournament during the third week of February 2018. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning created challenging conditions for the 131 participants over the weekend. Despite the subpar fishing environment, there was still an exciting weigh-in with many attendees and clubs represented. Booths from the Barbless Circle Hook Program, Pacific Island Fisheries Group, Division of Aquatic Resources and Hawai‘i Marine Recreational Fisheries Program provided lots of solid information and also shelter from the intermittent showers. The record for heaviest ‘o‘io weighed at a KKC tournament was broken last year when a 12.4 and a 11.3-lb ‘o‘io were brought in. That means that going without one can hurt your chances for a safe summer on the water. Here are three common mistakes boat owners make with DSC-VHF radios and some simple ways to improve safety aboard your boat. Mistake #1: Relying on an old VHF radio to signal that you are in distress. If you are using a VHF radio that was manufactured more than 15 years ago, you’re relying on old technology. ■ The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two fishers off Moloka‘i after their vessel reportedly capsized on Thursday, June 7, 2018. A 45’ response boat-medium crew from Station Maui and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point responded. The aircrew located the fishers and hoisted them to safety before returning them to Moloka‘i. Watch standers at Coast Guard Joint Response Coordination Center (JRCC) Honolulu received an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) alert with a location south of Moloka‘i at 12:06 p.m. They called the phone number registered to the EPIRB confirming, in turn, a blue- and white 18-foot recreational vessel launched out of Kaunakakai Harbor, Moloka‘i, Thursday morning with two men aboard to go fishing. “If these men did not have an EPIRB, they might not be…

If you haven’t yet heard, it’s OK to help a sea turtle that’s been accidentally snagged. You may touch a turtle to help save a life. It’s OK! DLNR Issues Licenses and Stamps for the New Hunting Season ■ Effective June 15, 2018, the Department of Land and Natural Resources district and administrative offices began issuing hunting licenses and stamps for the new hunting season (July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019). A valid hunting license is required for hunting on public and private lands.
