We Need Your Help To Learn More About Oceanic Whitetip Sharks The Joint Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), in partnership with the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is conducting a study to learn about the habitat use and FAD-associative behavior of oceanic whitetip sharks and other shark species. The success of the project, which aims to inform by-catch reduction strategies in industrial and small-scale fisheries, depends largely on the collaborative efforts and local knowledge of Hawai’i’s fishermen. So far, our partnerships with local fishermen and divers have resulted in the tagging of 11 oceanic whitetip sharks. ■ For more than 20 years, I’ve been teaching O‘ahu-based Boy Scouts how to tie knots and how to fish. Much of what I teach them, I learned when I was a Boy Scout myself. I’m an old dog that still loves to learn new tricks, though. Recently I had the chance to attend the BSA-Certified Angling Instructor Course. There, I learned about a new tool for teaching knot tying. It was so simple–just a 4-inch piece of wood dowel, a screw eye, and two pieces of cord (3 feet long and of different colors). ■ It started out like any night on the water. My fishing partner, Michael, and I were dropping small damashi, going for menpachi and ‘aweoweo. After a few hours of dropping, my rig got tangled on the reef below and I lost everything. At this point I wondered whether I should retie a damashi and keep going for reds or drop some dead ‘opelu for small ulua. Tired of catching little reds, I set up to drop ‘opelu. The first bait got to the bottom, and “Boom!” I was hooked into something. I could tell from the constant head shakes that it was definitely an ulua. After a minute or two, the fish surfaced. ■ On May 11, 2018, the Hawai‘i shallow-set longline fishery for swordfish reached 33 of 34 allowed loggerhead sea turtle interactions for 2018 and was closed by the National Marine Fisheries Service until January 1, 2019, as a settlement agreement approved by the U.S. District Court, District of Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i swordfish are landed and shipped fresh, ice-chilled and not frozen, with the primary market being the continental United States. Hawai‘i produces half of the U.S. domestic swordfish. “The record of 99 percent live releases, only two mortalities in 24 years and increasing loggerhead abundance over the past two decades underscores the management success of the Hawai‘i shallow set longline fishery,” noted Kitty M. Tahitian Prawns Warning Issued Tahitian prawns caught in Hawai‘i streams are a popular treat at graduation and other summertime parties and get-togethers. The DLNR, Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) is encouraging people to know the source of their prawns. Evidence has suggested that poisons used to kill garden and household pests have been used to kill prawns and are wiping out all of the aquatic wildlife in some East Hawai‘i streams. Last fall, DOCARE officers investigated at least two cases of mass stream kill-offs, likely associated with the harvest of Tahitian prawns, also known as giant freshwater shrimp. ■ We took an early-morning fishing trip from O‘ahu’s Poka‘i Bay Beach Park. We were able to launch at 5 a.m. and be on top of schools of ‘opelu by 6 a.m. After I got my third ‘opelu in the boat, I hooked up my Shakespeare Ugly Stik trolling rods with two ‘opelu. I let 125 yards of line out, and my drag started to scream. I grabbed my pole from its position behind me and set the hook. As I turned my 2017 Hobie Outback around to begin chasing down this fish, a 56-inch mahimahi leapt from the water. It was the bluest mahi I had ever seen. ■ A proposal by President Trump to allow the sale of E15 (15-percent ethanol) gasoline year-round has set off alarm bells for the nation’s largest boating advocacy group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). E15 is prohibited by federal law for use in recreational boat engines, voids many marine engine warranties and is currently banned for sale by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during summer months over concerns that it contributes to smog on hot days.
