■ I headed out from the south side of Maui with a couple of friends, Jon Jon Tabon and Bruce, to try to hide from the wind. We were on the water by 6 a.m., and the ocean was calm, glassy and crystal-clear—a perfect day for fishing. First things first: we tried to find some bait. The bait was around but hard to catch. After trying for a while, I only caught three fish for bait, but the sun was coming up and it was time to head out to deeper water to hunt some pelagic fish. End of the World at South Point ■ We left Hilo with high expectations of catching some marvelous fish. I was excited to head down to South Point. ■ Palila (Loxioides bailleui) is a 6-inch finch-billed Hawaiian honeycreeper with a yellow head and breast, gray back and gray/white belly. It feeds primarily on the immature seeds of the mamane tree and nests in its branches. Historically, the palila has inhabited only the island of Hawai‘i. Current bird populations are centered on the southwestern slope of Mauna Kea near Pu‘u La‘au. The palila was listed as an endangered species in 1967. The federal government designated habitat critical for its recovery in 1977. Palila critical habitat essentially encompasses the whole of Mauna Kea from 6,000 to 10,000 feet elevation. In 1979, the state of Hawai‘i was sued in federal court over its alleged failure to adequately protect the endangered palila. In a subsequent ruling, the U.S. District Court issued an…

■ U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke addressed the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council at its recent meeting held April 4 and 5 at the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C. The secretary emphasized the importance of outdoor recreation, specifically as it relates to boating, and included a message directed squarely at America’s nearly 12 million registered boat owners: “Boats are good. A lot of boats are better,” said Secretary Zinke, as he discussed his priorities to update and modernize visitor facilities on federal lands and to “bring them into the 21st century” to improve the visitor experience. ■ I was scrolling through the state record list and noticed HFN didn’t have a record for a Titan scorpionfish, or nohu. I figured I’d submit mine. This fish weighed 5 lbs and measured 19 inches in length and 14 inches in girth before gyotaku printing. I decided to join a couple of friends on an afternoon fishing session down in Puna. ■ Many of my happiest childhood summer days were spent my Dad’s boat. The boat of my childhood was small, a 17’ Whaler that I helped back into the landing. Game Management or Eradication? ■ Will Hawai‘i’s game animals be sustainably conserved or continue to be mercilessly slaughtered animal by animal? Is game management ensuring food for thousands of families or eradication with wasted carcasses that are no more than garbage? These key questions were asked at the statewide Game Management Advisory Commission (GMAC) meeting in Hilo on March 15. “Is this animal—the pig, the goat, the deer, the sheep—going to be here?” asked Ryan Kohatsu, GMAC East Hawai‘i, during a lively meeting exchange. “Right now there is no direction. Yellowtail in Hawaii ■ With the increasing amount of yellowtail being caught, I would like to answer some of the questions people have been asking. Question: What is the difference between hamachi and hiramasa? Answer: Both names are used to refer to the same species of fish; however, hamachi is the name for the farm-raised yellowtail, while hiramasa is the name used for wild-caught fish. Question: How did the hiramasa or yellowtail end up here in Hawai‘i? Answer: The yellowtail followed the 2011 Japan tsunami debris to Hawai‘i. Question: Will it be invasive to Hawai‘i? Answer: We are not 100-percent sure. I personally do not think they will be invasive because they made it to Hawai‘i naturally, without human introduction.
