A Cherished Lifelong Memory During the summer of 1949, I arrived in Kona from Honolulu with a brand-new .22 rifle, complete with a telescope. At the cocky age of 15, I had grand ideas of gunning down a wild boar with my rifle and looked forward to bagging a trophy with large tusks. At the time, I had no knowledge of how ferocious and vicious a wild boar could be. I didn’t have a clue that a .22 caliber rifle was way “undergunned” for a beast like that. I’d be dead by the time the boar realized he’d been shot. A Lifelong Dream Comes True on a Fishing Kayak Growing up in the suburban sprawl of Washington, D.C., my fishing was limited to sunfish, bass and catfish. (I do have to say, crappie are fun to catch–and delicious.) Down in my dad’s workshop was an amazing photograph of Dad holding the fin of a huge, exotic fish with a really long nose. That sailfish from Florida became a powerfully romanticized idea for me as an obsessive fisherman who badly wanted to have a heroic father figure. The Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area (SFMA) O‘ahu, will be closed to fishing for one year, from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2017. The SFMA encompasses the nearshore waters between the ‘Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards, or to the edge of the fringing reef if one occurs beyond 500 yards. The area is closed to fishing during odd-numbered years. “The periodic closure of Waikiki-Diamond Head SFMA to fishing is intended to give fish a temporary break from fishing pressure,” said Bruce Anderson, administrator of the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources. “Waikiki-Diamond Head is the only area in the state where this management approach is used, and we…

New Captain at Seafood Helm There’s a new captain at the helm of Hawai‘i fisheries management. According to the fishing advocacy organization Saving Seafood, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, who is chief of NOAA and Fisheries Management, included U.S. fisheries with his top priorities. In the 10 challenges facing the Commerce Department’s 47,000 employees, Wilbur specifically highlighted the need for “obtaining maximum sustainable yield for our fisheries.” Maximum sustainable yield (MSY) is the “largest catch sustainably taken from a fish stock over an indefinite period of time.” Sustainable MSY fishing is a goal of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), the main law governing U.S. fisheries. The U.S. commercial fishing industry had landings of 9.7 billion pounds of seafood in 2015 worth $5.2 billion, according to NOAA’s latest…

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of archery hunting in Pu‘uanahulu game management area (GMA) beginning Saturday, March 4, 2017, and continuing on weekends and State Holidays through Sunday, June 25, 2017. To accommodate other hunts, annual closure of the archery season in this GMA will be from July through February. Season length, bag limits, and hunting areas are those established in Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting.” The following conditions and restrictions will apply for the hunt: The daily bag limit will be one pig of either sex, one male sheep (ram), and two goats (any sex) per hunter per day. These are also the season limits for each species. Hunters will need to obtain 2017 ram and goat tags to legally…

All of the fish in the images were caught here in Hawai‘i’s waters, so we are asking for the Hawaiian name of the fish. In some cases, two of the images are related to each other. The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife would like to thank all wildlife artists that submitted amazing art entries for the 2017-18 Hawaii Wildlife Conservation and Game Bird Stamp Art Contest. A committee reviewed all submissions and two winners were chosen last month. The winners are: Game Bird Stamp Winner - David K. Hayes a wildlife artist from Kailua, Hawaii. David currently has a running art show at the Volcano Art Center titled, “Life of the Land”, showing until March 26, 2017. His winning entry is a painting in acrylic of a Ring-Neck Pheasant in Kohala, depicting a father with his son and daughter bird hunting with dogs. Fishermen and women love nothing better than a challenge, some friendly competition and having fun with good friends! The Bruddah Bill’s 24-Hour Challenge Invitational (BB24HC) provides all of these things and more. Bill Newton, owner of Ewa Beach Buy and Sell, puts on this semi-annual tournament that tests anglers’ skills as they race to catch fish on a Bingo card within a 24-hour time period. The card is made up of nine different fish species, and the winner is the team that catches the heaviest “Bingo.” If any team manages to capture all nine species on the card, they will “scoop the pot” and receive the prize for first, second, and third places. Aloha, Chuck. My name is Jeff (@fishingoverload on Instagram), and I just recently hosted the Fourth Annual #MauiMonstahBonah Fishing Tournament on Maui. It was held from Thursday, February 9, to the weigh-in on Sunday, February 12. It was a whole lot of fun, and there was a good turnout. We saw lots of good catches as well as a bunch of catch and release. The winners were as follows: Place Angler Catch Wt. First Arnel Yabes 8lbs 6oz Second Dusten Dudoit 7lbs 8oz Third Rees Brewster 6lbs 2oz Fourth Ford Zamora 5lbs 15oz There were also nine places acknowledged in addition to the main four winners.
