Discovery Highlights A Wealth Of Previously Unknown Biodiversity ■ Scientists from the Bishop Museum and NOAA have published a description of a new species of butterflyfish from deep reefs of the Papah-anaumokuakea Marine National Monument in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The study was published in the scientific journal ZooKeys. “Butterflyfish are the glamour fish of the coral reefs,” said Richard Pyle, Bishop Museum scientist and lead author on the publication. “They are colorful, beautiful, and have been very well-studied worldwide. Finding a new species of butterflyfish is a rare event.” Deep coral reefs at depths of 150 to 500 feet, also known as mesophotic coral ecosystems or “the coral reef twilight zone,” are among the most poorly explored of all marine ecosystems. ■ There is an old adage in fishing: “It’s better to be lucky than good.” This is true in that anyone can buy a boat, put out a lure and drive around while reading the newspaper and have a world-record marlin climb on, jump itself to death and float on the surface. All this lucky guy would have to do is hope his knot held when he towed the fish home. However, in tournament fishing, another old adage also applies: “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series celebrated its 30th year of operation in 2016. ■ The Seventh Annual North Shore Fishing Tournament, sponsored by the Wai‘oli Hui‘ia Church in Hanalei, was held on June 25 and 26, 2016. It is the only tournament in the state that brings awareness to the debris problem in our waters with an award for the most ‘opala brought in. Also, a couple of days before the event a red buoy was deployed at a secret location, and its return was worth an extra reward for the finder. Once again the weigh-in was on Hanalei Pier. This year’s event saw 50 boats entered. With gusty winds and big swells, the weather put the entrants to the test. At least the fish gods were cooperative. The timing of the event was perfect. ■ The first comprehensive, high-tech, fishery-independent survey for Hawai‘i bottomfish is underway. The survey is being led by Dr. Benjamin Richards and Russell Reardon of NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC). The survey is working with local fishermen in cooperative-research fishing and is rolling out state-of-the-art stationary stereo-video to assess the red fish and grouper known as, the Hawai‘i Deep Seven. The Hawai‘i Deep Seven include ‘opakapaka (pink snapper), onaga (longtail snapper), ehu (squirrelfish snapper), kalekale (Von Siebold’s snapper), gindai (Brigham’s snapper), lehi (silverjaw snapper), and hapu‘upu‘u (Seale’s grouper). PIFSC hopes to deploy low-light, deep-water cameras at 65 sites around the eight main Hawaiian islands. PIFSC will team with the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group (PIFG) to coordinate commercial fishermen in conducting 250 uniform fishing surveys across Hawai‘i. PIFSC’s stock…

Tiny Plastic Has Big Impacts ■ Fishing off Hilo, we caught a cane knife mahimahi. When cleaning the mahi, we found a plastic bottle cap inside the stomach. It was a sad sight to see and an even more tragic story to tell. A British study published in Britain’s Daily Mail has found that one in three fish caught in England have ingested plastic pollution. Thirty-six percent of fish caught by English Channel trawlers, including cod, haddock and mackerel, contained plastic. In Norway, 83 percent of lobsters contained microplastics. A Portuguese study found microplastics in 20 percent of 263 fish. In the Mediterranean, 121 fish (18 percent) including tuna and swordfish, had plastic. ■ With October marked the end of the slow showing of big blue marlin for the year. Three nice-sized female blues weighing 581.5, 504.5 and 454.5 lbs showed up at the scales. Throughout the month eight marlin were weighed and another four were released. Of the eight weighed, four were determined to be females and one a male. No striped marlin or spearfish were captured. Top Marlin Tops 580 It had been 15 weeks since there had been a blue marlin over 400 lbs weighed when the Jun Ken Po landed a 581.5-pounder captured by Chris Adlong. Chris was fishing with Capt. When I came here to Hawai‘i, my interest in fishing grew stronger. I go fishing twice a week in order to further enhance my skills and techniques. ■ On a windy yet beautiful Saturday evening (August 13, 2016), as the sun was simmering into the ocean, I was getting ready to take a “survivor man” shower when William (Boy) Martinez’s pole took off ratcheting. As he was fighting his fish, I was looking for my GoPro to get some footage of the action. “Boom!” A loud clang of my bell was followed by a roaring ratchet. ■ My day started earlier than usual. It was time for the Makena Landing Kayak Fishing Tournament, and also one of my claimed days for the Aquahunters Makahiki Kayak Fishing Tournament. When I got to the beach, the other participants and I signed in, set up our kayaks and launched in the dark. Everyone was out on the water, waiting for the sun to come up. Once the sky started to lighten up, it was time to look for bait. I got lucky, found a school of ‘opelu swimming around and caught a bunch of them. Hilo Trollers’ Banquet and Awards Ceremony ■ The Hilo Trollers held their Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 15, at the Higashi Hongwanji. Members brought pupus, and Kawamoto Store provided great food. This banquet is a great event to get the keiki interested in learning our culture of fishing. This year, door prizes included light spinning outfits for keiki. Each year the board must scramble for donations for door prizes and for donations for the season’s year-end awards. The banquet honors and recognizes the anglers and their families. The recipients of 17 different awards were detailed in the November “Hilo Seawatch”. Each awardee received a prize packet including gift certificates, skirts, lure heads, jigs and other gear. Winners in the largest flag fish categories are able to keep…
