This is my second year entering the “Hook Um & Cook Um” Ulua Tournament. The tournament ran from Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14. During that time we caught 4 uluas. Two on Friday night, 1 early Saturday morning, and the last one on Sunday before we broke camp. It is always a good day when you are fishing and spending quality time with the family, but a “good day” turned into an “awesome day” at 3:00 am Saturday morning when I reeled in a 111-lb ulua… Happy is an understatement. Hawaii Humpback Whales Delisted Hawaii Fishermen’s Alliance for Conservation and Tradition Inc. (HFACT) has been successful with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in their petition to delist the Hawaiian humpback whale from the endangered species list. NMFS wrote, “We finalize our proposed determination that the Hawai‘i DPS of the humpback whale does not warrant listing as a threatened or an endangered species under the ESA.” On April 16, 2013, NMFS received a petition from the HFACT to classify the North Pacific humpback whale population as a distinct population segment (DPS) and then “delist” that population under the Endangered Species Act. Prominent Native Hawaiians and Politicians Ask In early 2016, U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and seven native Hawaiians asked President Obama to expand the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM) by using his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Hilo Trollers and HICA Tournament The Hilo Trollers and the Hawaii Island Contractors Association (HICA) held their combined tournaments on Sunday, August 7. The weather cooperated, but it was a slow day for fishing. Five boats entered the Hilo Trollers regular monthly tournament, and those five along with two other boats entered the HICA tournament. The HICA tournament runs concurrently with the Hilo Trollers’ event every August and follows Hilo Trollers’ rules and procedures. Bank of Hawaii and Hawaii Planing Mill cosponsored the event. This benefit tournament generates scholarships for students in the building trades. Only two boats weighed in qualifying flag fish. For the Hilo Trollers, Capt. Three new species of fish are among the discoveries announced as scientists returned from a 25-day research expedition aboard NOAA Ship Hi‘ialakai to explore the deep coral reefs of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). Recently, I was lucky enough to be invited on an epic fishing trip to Kiribati, or Christmas Island. This Central Pacific island/atoll is just a three-hour flight from Honolulu via a once-a-week service on the way to Fiji. One such advocate is the soft-spoken, but intense president of Hui Maka‘ainana O Makana, Presley Wann, who speaks of a 20-year effort to win acceptance of the Ha‘ena’s Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) rule proposal. Today, in advance of the “Our Oceans” conference being held later this week at the State Department, the National Coalition for Fishing Communities (NCFC) delivered a letter to the White House calling on the President to refrain from designating new marine monuments under the Antiquities Act. Copies of the letter were also delivered to the offices of Senators representing the states of the signers. The letter, with over 900 fishing industry signers and supported by 35 fishing organizations that represent the majority of domestic seafood harvesters, instead urges the President to conserve marine resources through the federal fisheries management process established by the bipartisan Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Management Act (MSA). “The federal fisheries management process is among the most effective systems for managing living marine resources in the world,” the letter…
