Malibu Marlin Club Tops Day One Scoreboard ■ Twenty-eight teams representing some of the world’s most competitive big-game anglers hit the starting line on Kailua Bay on Monday, August 1, 2016, as Day One of the 57th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) got underway. “Start fishing, start fishing, start fishing!” rang out from tournament control following a traditional Hawaiian blessing. Teams from Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and the United States dropped their lines into Kona’s famous fishing grounds, the first points were on the scoreboard within an hour and a half. The first points awarded in 2016 were posted by angler Bobby Jenkins of Old South Marlin Club–International who tagged and released an estimated 120-lb Pacific blue marlin in just 21 minutes while fishing…

Hilo Trollers ■ The Hilo Trollers held a safe and successful tournament on Sunday, July 10. This was the week after the large Suisan Fourth of July Ho‘olaule‘a and the water was bumpy, so there was a small turnout. The largest ‘ahi and largest fish overall was a 61.3-lb ‘ahi landed on the Honey Girl by Capt. Gil Kuali‘i, angler Leia DeMello and crew member Dave Winchester. The Honey Girl also won Grand Champion honors with a combined weight of 77.3 lbs for their ‘ahi and an ono and for landing two different flag fish species. The largest mahimahi was a 28.2-lb fish landed on the Andrea W by Capt. Rodney Nishiki and angler Clive Tanimoto. They also captured a 30.1-lb ono that earned the award for the second largest…

■ I was down at the beach helping my friend Zane Schweitzer, 2016 winner of the Ultimate Waterman Challenge and three-time Master of the Ocean, with his InZane SUPer Groms event. We were helping inspire the kids by introducing them to windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and basically anything fun you can do in the ocean. Zane is super humble and always giving back to the community in any way he can. Right on! Toward the end of the event, we noticed some-one pulling his kayak up the beach, and Zane asked him if he would like to share his experience with the kids. Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council Asks for Transparent Analysis of Proposed Marine Monument Expansion ■ The following is excerpted from a press release from the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council addressing transparency in the proposed marine monument expansion. In particular, the release highlighted the failure by White House officials to fulfill promises made during the expansion of the Pacific Remote Islands Monument in 2014: The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council agreed to a resolution that asks the U.S. government to address a suite of concerns before acting on the proposed expansion of the Papah-anaumokuakea Marine National Monument (MNM) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Council members Suzanne Case, Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources chair, and Julie Leialoha, Conservation Council for Hawai‘i president, voted against the proposal.…

No Fish and Poi, Not a Happy Boy ■ Pele Defense Fund’s Palikapu Dedman said Hawaiians are not going to have their poi without Ka‘upulehu fish. Palikapu, a longtime Hawaiian rights advocate, is planning a hukilau to challenge the newly installed 10-year Ka‘upulehu fishing ban. Palikapu told West Hawaii Today, “I am planning on going out there and bringing a whole bunch of Hawaiians to go fishing. They don’t want to hear you. So now, you got to be forced to go through this kind of process.” Gov. David Ige signed a DNLR rule establishing a Kona Coast Marine Reserve at Ka‘upulehu. It includes a 10-year fishing ban to the 120-foot depth across a 3.6-mile stretch of the West Hawai‘i coastline. In 2026, the reserve would be reviewed for continued…

■ When I moved to Hawai‘i, I had no idea I would become obsessed with fishing. Looking at my neighbor’s boat pulling in and watching him unload huge fish, I got quite curious about what it must feel like to reel in one of those giants.
