Over the last year, I’ve landed a total of seven kawakawa while shoreline fishing on the Big Island. Five of the seven were caught on metal jigs with an assist hook and a rubber squid. The first time I landed a kawakawa from shore I was jigging a GT Fight Club Ice Cream lure. The kawakawa hit it on the drop-off as the line was feeding out of my reel. I could feel the line start to feed faster and faster, so I closed my bail and set the hook. It was a short-lived fight, but I was stoked to have landed my first pelagic from shore. DAR has expanded its fish tagging program to now include all species of goatfish or “weke” that are found in Hawaiian waters. So you may be asking yourselves, “Why goatfish?” Members of the Goatfish or Weke family are popular food fishes with about 12 species found here in Hawaii. These include species such as the kumu, moana, malu, weke ‘ula, moana kea and others. Goatfish are unique from other reef fish in that they possess a pair of barbels on their chin which function as sensory organs used most importantly for finding and recognizing food buried in the sand. Almost any fisherman or diver has observed at least once, a weke probing the sand with their barbels looking for prey. Common in inshore waters, many are considered desirable food fishes…

Aloha, fishermen. I make an effort to try to catch as many different species of fish as I can. I have lost a lot of sinkers and a lot of patience trying to catch these different fish. As a result, I have ended up focusing on fishing areas that have sandy or muddy bottoms. As a result of fishing these areas, I have been catching a lot of ‘o‘io. I have written a few articles about catching big ‘o‘io over the last two years. I have been following my own advice by continuing to use light line, 8-to 10-lb test, and sand turtles for bait. It’s heartbreaking to see a marine mammal tangled up in derelict fishing line. It’s sad to see an otherwise beautiful Hawaiian beach covered in a vast array of plastic. It’s telling when the stomach contents of sea birds often show they’ve ingested these plastics. Marine debris can have numerous impacts on the natural environment, many of them detrimental to the overall health of the ecosystem. A Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) commissioned aerial survey of all coastlines in the main eight Hawaiian islands shows, not surprisingly, that plastic items constitute most of the marine debris landing on our shores. After only one blue marlin was captured off Lahaina during April, a few more started to show up by the end of May. Five were weighed, along with a single striped marlin, and another four blues were released. Fourteen spearfish dominated the billfish catches during the month. After a 53-day lull between weighing a blue marlin in Lahaina, the START ME UP LA DAT hoisted the third largest blue of the year, weighing 557.5 lbs. Anglers Daniel Leung and his dad Dan tag-teamed the blue while fishing with Capt. Jay Rifkin and deckman Roy Kummer. They were on a four-hour private trip, and Jay was working the ledge between Kamaiki Point, Lana‘i, and the LA-buoy marks off Olowalu. The Molokai Whippas hosted their 39th Annual Invitational Tournament on April 30, 2016. More than 90 anglers were entered in the tournament and battled storm-generated surf to participate in the event, which generates funds for scholarships for graduating seniors each year. The tournament culminated in the awards banquet where the scholarships and prizes were awarded. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our donors and sponsors, the Whippas opened the awards program by awarding two $1,000 scholarships–one to Thomas Tamanaha and one to Khaylie Adachi-Kawamae. It’s Turtle Nesting Season in Hawai‘i Summer is here, and with it comes sea turtle nesting season! As a result, you may witness increased sea turtle activity, including mating in near-shore waters, as well as more basking (resting) on beaches. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA Fisheries, and the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources reminds everyone–locals and visitors alike–to respect our sea turtles. The two species that nest in the islands are the green sea turtle (honu) and the hawksbill sea turtle (‘ea). The majority of Hawai‘i’s honu migrate to French Frigate Shoals, located in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, to reproduce. However, an increasing number of honu are now nesting on beaches of the main Hawaiian islands. Primary ‘ea nesting beaches occur along the south Ka‘u Coast…

On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, I went to Wal-Mart and bought my daughter Jalene her first fishing pole–a $15 rod-and-reel combo (da Barbie one). Dear Chuck, The day started super-early. I left the house at 4 a.m. and went to the North Shore of Maui only to find out that the conditions weren’t the best. So my brother and I drove all the way to the south side, hoping for some lighter winds. We found them. We unloaded all our gear, set up the kayaks and launched at around 6 a.m. I was trying to catch some ‘opelu for bait.
