Expect the Unexpected is Great Advice for Fishermen ■ Here’s some sage advice from an old pro: when fishing in waters where anything can happen, be ready for anything that happens. But what does that mean, and how do you do it? An assortment of recent examples from a month or two will help. 1. During the first months of 2016, a good run of shortbill spearfish and striped marlin put smiles on a lot of faces. But the run caused some frowns, too, because “shorts” and “stripers” are both adept at the “tickle and tease.” Some days they play with lures without getting hooked no matter what you do. Today’s Special: Turtle? ■ In the latest “Marine Turtle Newsletter,” a science team with Maui ties wrote a strong case to delist green sea turtles from the endangered species list. With its recovery evident, they argued, the Hawaiian green sea turtle may well end up back on first birthday lu‘au menus. Peter Bennett and Ursula Keuper-Bennett co-authored the Marine Turtle Newsletter Number 148’s “Guest Editorial: Comments on the Identification and Proposed Listing of Eleven Distinct Population Segments of Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas).” The Bennetts begin by describing where the turtle is now: “In early 2015, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the NOAA-National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), … proposed changing the way that green sea turtles are listed in the U.S. Endangered Species Act.” The proposal also wants…

I've just started fishing uluas this year. All of these fish were caught within 4 months. We caught a total of 14 uluas, but I lost 8 of my own, and my friend lost 3. This was another one caught at South Point. We did not weigh this one, but he came in smoothly and was caught on akule. This 25-lb ulua was caught at Smoking Rock with nenue bait and cross-line-type fishing. They call me "Triple K". It stands for Keola the Krossline Killah.
