Hi Chuck, Stan Wright thought you might be interested in this fly-fishing adventure. Attached are pictures from a great day that two youths spent learning and enjoying fly fishing. The adventure took place at the Kaneohe Yacht Club on January 3, 2016. Stan Wright met with Logan Lemquist and Devak Boneza-Solatorio. Both boys are star-ranked Boy Scouts of Troop 311, Kailua, and have been a part of Troop 311 for just two years, after crossing over from the Cub Scouts. Troop 311 is from St. John Vianney, Kailua. Already they have advanced to the rank of Star. Part of their advancing is the earning of merit badges. On Sunday, January 3, they completed the requirements for the Fly Fishing Merit Badge. The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and its Education Committee members are pleased to announce the availability of three scholarships for academic years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. HONOLULU --The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announces the opening of the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area, O'ahu, to fishing for one year beginning Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, and ending Saturday, Dec.31, 2016. The Fisheries Management Area encompasses the near shore waters between the 'Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards, or to the edge of the fringing reef if one occurs beyond 500 yards. "The stretch of shoreline and near shore waters between the Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse are very popular for fishing and other recreation among residents and visitors," said Bruce Anderson, Division of Aquatic Resources administrator. FAD Funding Deployed Here’s a Happy New Year’s greeting for off shore fishermen: fish aggregation device (FAD) buoys are back in business. According to Miel Corbett, the Deputy ARD, External Affairs for the Pacific Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, "The FAD project was approved in November, and the Hawai'i Division of Aquatic Resources was given authorization to start implementing the program." The state FAD website lists"recently deployed" FADs as NL, MM, LL, R, BO, CK, WK and PP. There’s more work to be done. State wide missing FADs include the following: Maui-K, HS, SO, N, LA, MC, JJ and GG; Hawai'i Island-XX, ZZ, SS, RN, G, C, VV, A, and HK; O'ahu-CO, J, II, X, T, P and V; and Kaua'i-EK, DK, BB, AA, KK and Z.…

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) has tallied community votes for the representatives who will serve on the Maunalua Bay Recreation Advisory Committee. DOBOR is establishing a community advisory committee for Maunalua Bay ocean users as a forum to provide input on the regulation and management of recreation activities in the bay. I have been writing for Hawai'i Fishing News for 30 years. I am not a great fisherman, but I have had some great fishing adventures with great anglers. I'd say that I'm an average angler with a passion for the sport and a love of writing about it. With the recent public announcement that HFN owners Chuck and Ellen Johnston are planning to retire, I started thinking about how they have affected our fishing lives and I could not help but reminisce. With each new year, we look toward the future and that brings renewed goals of what we want to accomplish in our fishing endeavors. Aloha Chuck, Here is a 51-pound ono I shot with my KCS RHS 105 speargun and my Aussie Reel combo. While doing a drift dive in about 70 to 80 feet on Kauai’s west side, looking for uku’s I was lucky enough to come across a school of ono's. I took aim at the biggest one and hit it midbody immediately spooling my reel. Then the race was on; I swam as hard as I could passing some nice size uku's, omilus and yellow spot papios that got curious because of all the commotion the ono created.
