I recently heard several horror stories that have compelled me to write a cautionary warning about the many dangers of working with lead. If you melt lead to make sinkers, jigs and inserts for trolling lures, pay careful attention to avoid serious injury. Many of us use scrap lead as our basic molding material. This lead may have been salvaged from lost sinkers recovered from the bottom, unwanted diving weights, or other discarded lead pieces, waiting to be recycled. Many of these salvaged items have spent time submerged underwater. If so, some water has penetrated into the interstices of the lead and turned it into a bomb of sorts. Before the lead melts at 700° F, the water turns to steam and may cause the lead to explode. The blast…

Missing FADS: the Merry-Go-Round More than a year ago, fishermen in Hilo noticed it. Kona fishermen confirmed it. Maui fishermen said it was true, that they were all gone. FADs around the state were missing due to normal wear and tear and were not being customarily replaced. State FAD program officials said they are fishing in the blind on this one. Responsible federal agencies aren’t forthcoming. Like a running boat whose only soul is lost overboard, the FAD saga has been a dizzying merry-go-round to nowhere. Last April “Splash!” contacted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the federal agency responsible for the FAD program. After the dramatic drop in blue marlin catches during August, September numbers remained the same. Thirty-two billfish were caught. There were a lot of small male blue marlin captured during the month. Of the 20 blues weighed, I sexed 19 of them. Fifteen were males weighing between 98.2 and 171.4 lbs, and four were females weighing between 256.6 and 461.1 lbs. Another 12 blues, estimated to weigh between 75 and 200 lbs, were released. I would presume that 95 percent were males.
