Kona Blue-Water Action Aloha, Chuck. My buddy Jeff Alberts and I have been spearfishing in the waters off the Kona Coast. Water temperatures are warm, and the fish are aggressive. I took a long shot on a blue marlin and smacked it behind the gill plate. The fish fought for about 30 minutes. Jeff went down for a backup shot but missed. The fish turned on Jeff and followed him to the surface. I definitely was scared for him. The marlin was all lit up in sparkles of blue and silver. It was very intimidating. The marlin finally turned and backed down to 80 feet. We got another shot 15 minutes later. We smoked it and shared the fish with friends and family. Bring Honu Conservation Home As a citizen volunteer and the co-chair of the Oceania Region of the IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group, George Balazs recently wrote a letter to the editor to newspapers around the state. The letter said it’s time to bring U.S. federal endangered species efforts for green sea turtles back home to Hawai‘i. George, a 33-year NOAA zoologist working with Hawai‘i marine turtles, wrote the following in the Hawaii Tribune Herald: “The cultural revival of the Hawaiian people throughout the past century is one of the many joys I’ve witnessed since making Hawai‘i my home in 1965. Hilo Trollers and HICA August Tournament The Hilo Trollers ran a safe and successful offshore fishing tournament on Sunday, August 2. This tournament ran concurrently with the Hawaii Island Contractors Association (HICA), Bank of Hawaii, and Honsador Lumber’s 16th Annual Scholarship Tournament. A number of boats ran in both tournaments. Nine boats entered the Hilo Trollers tournament, and seven landed qualifying fish. One ‘ahi, eight ono and four mahimahi came up. The Grand Champion Award went to Capt. Eric Baptiste and angler Kevin Medeiros of the Easy Money for catching three of the four flag fish: a 35.6-lb ‘ahi, a 31.9-lb ono and a 39.7-lb mahimahi. My profession as a photographer takes me all over the island of Kaua‘i. With my busy schedule, my fishing sprees are limited to an hour or less a day. I like to fish four different areas in succession. I cast between 10 and 15 times in one area and then move to the next. I have routinely done this for the last two years. I believe that in whipping, success is inducing the fish to strike your lure and you need to find the fish. Recently, 26 participants returned from Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, having completed the first-ever joint expedition expressly combining traditional navigators, cultural practitioners, and government and university researchers. The Polynesian double-hulled sailing canoe Hikianalia and modern research vessel Searcher embarked on an expedition to conduct navigator training for future legs of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Malama Honua Voyage, shoreline ‘opihi (Hawaiian limpet) counts, reef fish surveys, and exchange of ideas on how to better manage Hawai‘i’s critical marine resources. “The best part about the joint expedition was being able to talk with the Hikianalia crew about ways to malama, or care for, our ocean resources,” said Makani Gregg, cultural researcher traveling aboard the Searcher. “We were able to get on the shoreline with each other and count ‘opihi on some of the…

After catching a dozen opelu we noticed what looked like a sailfish chasing a crocodile needle fish right towards our boat, so we quickly bridled a bait and tossed it out. As we were feeding the line out with the clicker on, we heard the reel begin to scream. We let it run for about ten seconds before setting the drag and putting both motors in gear to set the hook.
