I was recently adrift in the 1000 fathom line off the shore of Hilo around 5 a.m. I started to notice these tiny little almost iridescent blue-looking objects in the water. They were everywhere; must have been thousands. Curiosity got the best of me as I reached in the ocean and scooped one out. It was the smallest blue-colored crab I had ever seen. I have tried to research what type of crab this was that could have possibly just hatched or something to that nature. I haven’t had much luck in figuring anything out. ■ The February 2015 issue of HAWAII FISHING NEWS included the annual list of Hawai‘i records for the largest fish of various species caught in the state. Among the new records was a 15-lb grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) caught in the Wailoa River at Hilo by Avery Berido on September 13, 2013. A photograph taken by Avery of the record grass carp garnered our attention because the pictured fish looked quite similar to another Asian carp species, the black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus). Avery informed us that he also captured a 10-lb grass carp from the same river in June 2013. By the time we became aware of the captures, the fish were no longer available. Hilo Trollers Tournament ■ The Trollers’ third tournament of the season was on Sunday, June 7. The weather was great, and the water was almost too flat to bring the ‘ahi to the surface, so our fishermen had a nice cruise while looking for the “big boys.” Most boats went south because ono had been biting at the point and ‘ahi had come up on lures during the week. We are at the beginning of the regular summer ‘ahi bite, and the tournament results showed it. Eleven boats entered, and nine boats landed qualifying flag fish. There were no marlin or mahimahi, but four nice-sized ‘ahi came up including one “gorilla.” There were also plenty of ono. Three boats competed for the Grand Champion Award by landing both ‘ahi and…

■ The sun had yet to rise on March 29 when three buddies and I eased our kayaks down the steps of Mahukona onto the pre-dawn water. There were only a few days these past months that the wind allowed us to fish the border of the ‘Alenuihaha Channel. At 5:30 a.m. there was already more than a slight breeze, so I knew it was going to be an “iffy” day on the water. But you gotta try, right? Kayak fishing is always best with live bait, so our group split up. One group headed south to locate the ‘opelu ko‘a down by Lapakahi, while the other group headed north to chase the school that congregates by the 35-fathom mark by “high wall.” Using my Humminbird depth finder to locate…

■ At 6 a.m. midweek, I got a text from Kaimi reporting that the conditions were prime for a late-afternoon plugging session. We had just finished a batch of experimental lures we’d refined over the last year, and I had finished wrapping a factory sample of our 8’6” medium-heavy popping rod. This would be our chance to give these products a trial by fire. The variable winds made work miserable, and I couldn’t wait to punch out and get on the water. So far, the biggest one I caught on the plug. Few cuts and bruises but super rewarding. Caught it on a GT Fight Club popper the Cubera “Mango” 60. We caught this 793-lb blue marlin on the 1000-fathom ledge out at Ko Olina on the TUIEA. It took us 45 minutes to get her in. She almost spooled us ’cause we couldn’t get the boat in reverse. We ended up turning around and running right at her. It was a team effort. Everyone took turns reeling her in and helping with the line. Once I seen color I yelled, “we’re going need a bigger boat!” It took us a long time to figure out what we were going to do once we got her tail wrapped. We tried to pull her onto the swimstep, but nearly broke that. We needed to get the fish out of the water in fear of sharks, so we tied her to the side…

Types of Reefs and Islands ■ Almost all topwater spincasting takes place within 100 yards of a coral reef. Whether you wade inside or take a boat outside, it is useful to recognize the different types of reefs. Fortunately, coral reefs of the world grow where the water is warm. All the New Pacific Islands, most of which owe their very existence to the coral reef, lie in a belt approximately 20° to 25° north and south of the equator, within the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. There are very few exceptions. Kure, the last atoll in the Northwest Hawaiian Island chain, Midway Island and a few other reefs lie outside 25°N latitude. Tag-and-Released Marlin Live ■ The IGFA magazine International Angler said that a meta-analysis study of electronic tags, published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, reported that tagged and released billfish have an 86-percent survival rate. The study authors, headed by Dr. Michael Musyl, analyzed results from 46 independent tag-and-release studies from both sport fishermen and commercial longliners. More than 25 years of electronic billfish tagging studies show that there were 41 instances of post-release deaths, usually within 10 days of tagging. Blue marlin were involved in 12 studies and had seven observed deaths out of 142 tags for an 86-percent survival rate. Other species had similar survival rates: striped marlin–86 percent, black marlin–86 percent, sailfish–90 percent, white marlin–89 percent. Spearfish only had two fish tagged and a…

■ Whalers in the 1800s hunted Hawai‘i humpback whales almost to extinction. In 1992 the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (HIHWNMS) was created to save this endangered species. It worked. Now the recovered whale population is at historic numbers with survival assured. The sanctuary, like a sharp-spined porcupine fish, has plans to balloon itself into the throat of the ecosystem, managing 35 percent of Hawai‘i state waters and “any living or non-living resource” within it. From April 27 to May 1, HIHWNMS scoping meetings were held throughout the islands vetting a smorgasbord of four alternative plans for the sanctuary’s future. ■ It was one of the best Mays for blue marlin since 2005. Twenty blues made it to the scales, and another nine were released. A few nice-sized females made the lineup, including Lahaina’s first “grander” since 2007. A 503.8-, a 487.5 and a 444.4-pounder also made the stats.
