Monk Seal Pup Beaten to Death
A juvenile female monk seal was found beaten to death on Kaua‘i. In an effort to motivate bounty hunters, there’s $20,000 on the head of the seal slayer.
The Humane Society, Conservation Council for Hawaii, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Monk Seal Foundation, offered $5,000 and then bumped it to $10,000. The Garden Island newspaper sweetened the reward with another $10,000.
The female seal, tagged RF58, was born June 28, 2014, at Waipake Beach on Kaua‘i’s northeast coast to a mother known as “Rocky.” Rocky is often spotted on O‘ahu beaches. This was Rocky’s eighth offspring.
