Dear Chuck, I wanted to let you know how we did on this year’s Alaskan adventure. This year we decided to spend a little more time in Alaska and go to a lodge as well as do the normal RV portion of our trip. The lodge we decided on was the Togiak River Lodge (TRL) in Togiak, Alaska. TRL is the only lodge allowed on the Togiak River, so we had the opportunity to comfortably target Chinook salmon without too much competition. After flying into Anchorage, we took a 90-minute “hop” to Togiak. Then they shuttled us on boats a couple of miles up the river to the lodge. Longer ago than I care to remember, I made an accidental discovery that appeared to be promising. I was molding inserts for trolling lures when I got a weird idea. As you may or may not know, the “insert” is the core of a trolling lure. It’s the piece you make in an appropriate shape and color and then mount it with eyes, labels and other features. Then you insert it into the trolling lure mold, pour resin to fill and pull out the final shape of the desired trolling lure. When done right, the insert is supposed to look “fishy” so that it will get a bigger fishy to bite it. On looking at my inserts, I wondered if they looked fishy enough to catch fish in their own…

‘O‘IO ‘O‘io is the glamour fish of sport fishing throughout the world because of its strength and speed as a fighter and its bright silver appearance. Although it’s a delicacy in Hawai‘i, ‘o‘io isn’t a popular food fish anywhere else because it is extremely bony. Anglers just enjoy the fish for its fight and throw it back. Found year-round in tropical waters, ‘o‘io live in the depths but come into the shallows to feed. In Hawai‘i, ‘o‘io average from 1 pound to 5 pounds, but grow to almost 20 pounds in the central Pacific. Dedicated ‘o‘io lovers will take the time to prepare the fish for eating, which is not easy. Monk Seal Pup Beaten to Death A juvenile female monk seal was found beaten to death on Kaua‘i. In an effort to motivate bounty hunters, there’s $20,000 on the head of the seal slayer. The Humane Society, Conservation Council for Hawaii, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Monk Seal Foundation, offered $5,000 and then bumped it to $10,000. The Garden Island newspaper sweetened the reward with another $10,000. The female seal, tagged RF58, was born June 28, 2014, at Waipake Beach on Kaua‘i’s northeast coast to a mother known as “Rocky.” Rocky is often spotted on O‘ahu beaches. This was Rocky’s eighth offspring. It’s not been a good year for Rocky. Rocky, her pup and three other seals were attacked by dogs on Kaua‘i in July. The attack killed…

Save Queen’s Beach. Save tourism. Save jobs. Hopefully, that will be the decision of our City Council and it quickly will pass the necessary Interim Development Controls on Queen’s Beach. Houses, hotels, or other commercial establishments planned by the Kacor Development Corporation for Queen’s Beach would be harmful to our economy. We would lose a valuable coastal park/preservation site with great potential, resulting in a negative effect on tourism. Further, the lowland of Queen’s Beach is a prime tsunami inundation area, and our economy does not need any more mainland news photos of dwellings in Hawai‘i devastated by natural disasters. Questionable development by Kacor includes a gas station across the highway from the Sandy Beach-Queen’s Beach region which is not only reachable by a tsunami, but not appropriate in terms…

Hilo Trollers Banquet and Annual Awards The Hilo Trollers held their 39th annual awards ceremony and banquet on Saturday, November 1. The event wrapped up another safe and successful season. The banquet was held at the Higashi Hongwanji Mission. More than 60 fishermen and family members enjoyed great food, really bad fishing jokes, and lots of fish talk. Members brought tasty pupus, and Kawamoto Store provided great food. There were also door prizes for everyone, and a raffle and silent auction. Sixteen annual year-end Hilo Trollers awards were presented at the banquet. The coveted Fisherman of the Year award went to Capt. Aric Okuda and crew members Keith Okazaki and Kevin Eblacas. It is that time of the year for Maui, when the blue marlin leave town. It’s too early for the annual striped marlin and spearfish run from January through March. There were only two blue marlin weighed during November, and another was released. A lone spearfish found its way to the scales. The KAI AKUA hung a nice-sized blue marlin weighing 447.9 lbs, angled by Billy Holsapple. He was fishing with Capt. Gene Perkins Jr., Capt. Ryan Thomas and crewman Tony Boyle. Capt. Gene was working some bait piles out near the 300-fathom ledge off the backside of Lana‘i. What do you consider to be a good day on the water? Some like favorable conditions, and some just want fish in the boat. My fishing day always starts out the same. I wake up every 15 minutes from midnight until the alarm sounds, ready with anticipation to start the day. Brutal Murder–a Tragedy The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in cooperation with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), is investigating the suspicious death of a Hawaiian monk seal on the northeast coast of Kaua‘i. Anyone with information about this incident should call the toll-free, confidential reward tip line, (855) DLNR-TIP. In co-operation with the DLNR, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has again posted a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this latest monk seal death.
