Bruce Lentz is in the news again. The successful Kona shore fisherman was featured in this column a few months ago when he caught a 15-lb ‘omilu from shore using a live iheihe (ballyhoo) for bait. At the time, it was Kona’s biggest ‘omilu of 2014. This time, Bruce caught a fish that is more rare, bigger and even more exciting. On September 8, Bruce was whipping from shore with a live halalu when he hooked a 24-lb uku. These “gray snapper” live in deeper water and rarely come into the shallows where Bruce hooked his. As a Father’s Day present, Hawai‘i island fishing guide Don Memmer and his son Luke traveled to Baja, Mexico, for a roosterfish fiesta. For two weeks, they fished and enjoyed the aloha of two former Hawai‘i guys, outfitters Jay Murakoshi and Jonathan Roldan, who treated the Memmers to La Paz tight lines and fish tacos south of the border. Don and Luke left Hawai‘i at the height of ‘ahi fever for the hot fishing of Isla Cervallo. About an hour south of La Paz, Isla Cerralvo is the southernmost island in the Sea of Cortez. Bob Fram began distributing seafood out of his car in the early ’80s to restaurants here in Hawai‘i. Bob started by selling farm-raised Kaua‘i blue prawns. Hawaiians Storm Taveuni When a group of locals from Hawai‘i visit anywhere in the world, they take their destination by storm with their aloha spirit. Taveuni, Fiji, was not spared from such a gregarious onslaught. Each of our visiting anglers brought their own unique talents and interests as they descended upon an island culture that has similar proclivities for fun and laughter as their island home. In the past 10 years, 27,000 rifles and pistols have been imported by residents of Hawai‘i County, significantly expanding the island firearms inventory acquired in previous decades. However, unlike O‘ahu and every mainland state, no publicly accessible shooting range exists for their use. A grass roots initiative launched by island residents in 2004 has culminated in plans for development of a public shooting range on state land in North Kona. As currently envisioned, the proposed Hawaii Public Shooting Range at Pu‘uanahulu would contain venues to support virtually all target shooting and archery sports activities. As the state’s premier shooting sports center, it is expected to draw thousands of visitors annually to compete in scheduled target shooting events and to provide an accessible and safe shooting venue for Hawai‘i residents. Aquarium Collector Wants Jury Jay Lovell, the Kona aquarium fish collector who, when surrounded underwater by unknown divers, pulled out the regulator of one diver, pleaded “not guilty” to second-degree terroristic threatening. Jay didn’t talk at the arraignment, but his attorney Evans Smith did and requested a jury trial. Evans also asked for a media blackout. Evans told West Hawaii Today Jay’s story: “While he was underwater, he was approached by six strangers.” Jay was the target of the first Sea Shepherd action in its worldwide reef awareness campaign. Sea Shepherd is known for the television show “Whale War,” which chronicles their actions–sometimes violent–against the Japanese whaling fleet in Antarctica.
