Good morning,
On September 19, 2014, we were fishing in Kane‘ohe Bay and caught a fish that we couldn’t identify. I have a few pictures and I am hoping you could help me get it identified. (Sorry, lousy quality pics). The closest fish we came across is a Eastern Pacific bonito, but we’re not sure if they make it to Hawai‘i.
What is also on my mind is if there is a state record for this species. Unfortunately, I gutted it, and put it in the freezer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much, Raymond Pregana
Chuck,
It’s a bonito. It looks like Sarda chilensis, the Eastern Pacific bonito, but it is not known from any islands of Oceania. I’ll ask Bruce Mundy.
