I am often tempted to buy something that I don’t need when it is a really good deal. So it was with a stupid red watch from Amazon.com. It sounded just terrific, because it was really cheap and macho looking, as well as being a diver’s watch with a really cool looking dial. When I got the watch, I quickly discovered that I couldn’t read the time, the date window was microscopic, and it weighed about 5 lbs! The rubber housing was much brighter than the one on my computer screen, as well. Thank God it was cheap! ■ In late July, some of our commercial fishermen buddies headed out for grouper from the docks at Cedar Key. It was to be their last run before taking a month off for lobstering in the Keys. They were about 23 miles southwest of the Cedar Key Number One Marker when they ran into the red tide. “There were dead fish on top of the water as far as your eye could see,” said Russell Sills. “Could have taken a dip net and put 2,000 to 2,300 lbs of fish in the boat.” According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, a red tide, or harmful algal bloom, “is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga (plantlike organism).” In Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, the species that causes most…

Spring/Summer Wrap-Up 2014 ■ After a fantastic late-winter, early-spring big blue marlin bite, things shut down dramatically. Lahaina charter fishermen waited until the middle of May for any billfish to show up, and then only five blue marlin were weighed. Spearfish catches dominated the rest of the month; eight were weighed, bringing the monthly total to 13 billfish. Big Blues Break Dry Spell After 22 days without any type of billfish being caught, the HINATEA finally weighed a 412.6-lb blue marlin captured by Jerry Guidish. Jerry was fishing with Capt. Chris Wong and deckman Peter Wong. The JUN KEN PO weighed the largest blue marlin during May. Their third fish over 500 lbs for the year, this one came in at 576.1 lbs and was captured by 17-year-old Nolan Johnson.…

■ At an hour-long West Wing meeting on September 9, 2014, members of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and commercial fishing industry representatives from the U.S. Pacific Islands spoke with Counselor to the President John Podesta and senior officials from the White House Council on Environmental Quality to express concerns regarding the President’s proposed expansion of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM). The delegation stated that the proposed expansion will harm U.S. fishermen in the region without benefitting the surrounding environment. The PRIMNM currently includes waters 0 to 50 miles from shore around the seven U.S. Pacific Remote Islands. Hawaii Island Contractors Tournament Results ■ Every August, the Contractors Tournament runs concurrently with the Hilo Trollers Tournament on the first Sunday of the month. The tournament follows Hilo Trollers’ rules and uses the Hilo Trollers’ volunteer weigh-in crew. The contractors provide their own record keepers and have their own awards banquet. A number of Hilo Trollers’ captains also participate in this tournament. Officially, this is the Hawaii Island Contractors Association (HICA), Bank of Hawaii, Honsador Lumber LLC Scholarship Tournament, which supports scholarships for students in the building trades. The tournament ran safely and successfully on Sunday, August 3. Thirteen boats were entered, and eight landed fish. One marlin and seven ono came up.
