I am writing this article on the first of July, and the ‘oama run has already begun. Well, it’s more like the ‘oama walk at this writing, but the signs of a good ‘oama season are already showing. On the island of O‘ahu, the usual places are already seeing small schools of 30 or so showing up. That’s a small amount, but it is a positive sign. Often when the ‘oama show up in these small amounts, there are multiple schools in the area that eventually meet up to form larger schools that become a full-scale ‘oama run. Some recent events have drawn special attention to several topics we’ve written about in “FISHING Hawaii Style®” columns. During the 2014 World Cup Blue Marlin Tournament held on July 4, Kona entered a big fleet (44 boats), as usual, but for the first time one team entered from Kaua‘i. Aboard his charter boat NEMESIS, Capt. Darrin Auger hosted Floyd Pansano in hopes of stealing the big-money prize (half a million bucks) away from the rest of the world. Floyd is a tugboat captain from Corpus Christi, Texas, and can probably fill his tugboat with all of the trolling lures he has amassed from makers here and around the world. On June 17, 2014, at the Our Oceans Conference held at the State Department in Washington, D.C., President Obama announced his intent to use Presidential authority to “preserve and protect the ocean.” The White House’s press release clarifies that the Administration will immediately consider expansion of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Further details on what the public and U.S. fishermen in the Pacific Islands might expect are in the May 20, 2014, report to the United States government “Expansion of the U.S. Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument: The largest ocean legacy on Earth,” accessible on the Marine Conservation Institute website. Suisan Ho‘olaule‘a Raised ‘Some Plenty Fish’! Suisan generously supported the Fourth of July weekend Ho‘olaule‘a again, this year on Saturday the 5th. It was a very successful tournament with lots of fish landed in all four flagfish categories as well as the aku category. The weather cooperated, and all boats came in safely. I’ll present the highlights here and give further details next month when the photos become available. This is Hilo’s largest boat tournament, and it is “rod and reel, anything goes.” It draws larger commercial boats, and Suisan and other donors make the prizes quite worthwhile. Exciting Last-Second Win in World Cup ▪The 30th Annual World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup) came to a nail-biting conclusion in Kona, Hawai‘i on July 4. This unique, worldwide competition is fished for eight hours in each teams’ time zone. It’s a one-day, winner-take-all, blue marlin only over 500 lbs event. Many of the world’s most respected big-game captains and anglers take part in many big blue marlin hot spots such as New Guinea, Portugal, the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, Mexico and Kona, Hawai‘i. While a lot of people are chasing ulua at this time of year, I find as many thrills pursuing the smaller-sized trevallies. While the sheer power of a large ulua can make your arms and back ache, fighting future ulua on the right-sized tackle can get your heart pumping just as much as it would when you’re fighting its big brothers on heavy tackle. To see the chase and feel the strike in your hand the instant the speedy papio crashes your lure is addicting. Shipwreck’s Black Reef Problem U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has spent $5.5 million removing three shipwrecks from Palymra Atoll and Kingman Reef national wildlife refuges 1,000 miles south of Honolulu. This is the first phase of reef restoration. Scientists speculated that the iron in the shipwrecks was the cause of the “black reef” problem. A native species corallimorph is smothering coral on 740 acres at Palymra, while invasive filamentous algae are damaging coral at Kingman. Corallimorph are speculated to be feeding off the iron leaching from the salvaged shipwreck. Global Diving and Salvage of Seattle and Curtin Maritime of Long Beach, California worked from November to January hauling out the wrecks. The Nature Conservancy, USFWS and Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium estimated it would take five years to remove all…

The biggest swell in years was about to hit the Kona Coast. Mitchell Izuno’s regular fishing partners, Chris and Komaka, had just left “the spot” with a tagged 82-pounder, the largest tagged ulua they’d ever caught. Mitch had the spot reserved and was stoked that all the signs indicated good fishing. He had to go fishing! Because his partners had just returned from fishing, Mitch decided to call Davis, who lived right up the street from the fishing spot. After a short off-road trip, Mitch and Davis could see how big the ocean swells were but that didn’t faze them. They gathered up their gear and hiked in. Wai‘anae has wrapped up another successful year of Ahi Fever. The weigh-in on Sunday, June 15 was exciting. It gained momentum as each ‘ahi came in larger and larger until Joshua Soares and crew #113 from the SASHA ANN brought in a 233.4-lb ‘ahi. Joshua said they snagged the fish first thing in the morning and in 20 minutes or less had this winner on board. Congratulations! Little did Joshua Sr. know that his lucky charm son Joshua Jr. would help him snag the big winning ‘ahi. Joshua Sr. has been fishing in the Ahi Fever tournament since he was a young man fishing with his dad. This was his ninth time as a captain, and his son’s first time. President Obama wants to make the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument the largest MPA, marine protected area, in the Pacific. It would expand the no-fishing zone from 87,000 square miles to 782,000 square miles. On the line are Hawai‘i fishermen caught on a military strategic foreign policy hook baited with environmentalist palu (chum) for all things pristine. The monument now includes islands Howland, Baker, Jarvis, atolls Johnston, Wake, Palmyra and Kingman Reef. These areas signed into law by President Bush in 2008 would expand from the existing 50-mile area protection to a 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. Ironically, fishing, the top economic activity in the zone, would be prohibited. President Obama, never seen with a fishing pole, cited growing up in Hawai‘i as the reason for the move. “Growing up…

Costa Pro Staff Members Break World Record Recently, Costa pro staff members Capt. Josh Temple and mate Andrea McQuade, along with their crew, broke the world record for most blue marlin caught and released in one year, with 553 confirmed releases to date. The largest fish caught so far this year by the team stands at 475 lbs. The boat, the CAROL LIBBY, is a 60-foot SpAmerican (Hybrid Spencer and American Custom Yachts) based out of Los Suenos, Costa Rica. Using a mix of bait and switch, lures and live bait, since February, the team has so far raised 926 blue marlin, had 773 bites, and placed 389 tags for The Billfish Foundation (TBF). “Currently we hold five world records: the most blue marlin ever released in a single day…
